Nexus is Latin for both a group of things bound together and the act of binding them. That makes it the perfect name for Winstep's free Nexus Dock utility. Like other desktop docks, it has time and weather widgets, a screenshot tool, and quick access to Windows features like e-mail and the Start menu. But that's just the beginning of what this versatile app can do. It brings just about anything in your PC together on the desktop for instant access -- programs, utilities, files, folders, properties information, and so on -- and displays them in an interactive, expanding docking bar that, like the rest of Nexus Dock, can be customized to suit any need. You can add Modules, Separators, and Commands, change its Size and Position, alter its Appearance and Sounds, and do much more. It's already compatible with Windows 8, too.

We extracted and started Nexus Dock, which offered to check for the latest version and also displayed an optional Tool Tip. The dock is fairly substantial in its default configuration, with icons approximately the same size as our desktop icons. You can easily change the icon size to suit your style without sacrificing any flexibility since the dock automatically magnifies any icon the cursor passes over. This Mouseover effect produces a fun "wave" when you sweep the cursor side to side, but it's one of many effects we could configure from the Effects submenu, including Fluid and Blur. Clicking any dock entry let us configure its properties or open its container. The program's Preferences sheet offers a whole row of tabs, each with tons of options; the autohide feature has seven animation settings alone.

After getting the look, we were ready to customize the dock entries by linking programs, files, and such by clicking Insert New Dock Item. It was easy: docked items seemed to spring open before we'd finished a click. The newest version of Nexus Dock has noticeably faster and crisper rendering and lots of new effects, as well as touch-screen support, better laptop compatibility, and many new widgets.

"For taskbar replacement, beats Rocket- & ObjectDocks"

February 27, 2011  |  By NONCEY_TUCHUS

 |  Version: Winstep Nexus Dock 10.9

Pros

-Installs and uninstalls clean (RD and OD are horrific in this regard)

-Real system tray support.

-Lots of options (but see "cons")

Cons

-A ton of silly features that are on by default (including sounds D:). If you want something slimmer, you'll spend a lot of time in the preferences menu

-Ugly clock, unreadable at small sizes

-No support for third-party plugins/"docklets"

Summary

First of all, RocketDock and ObjectDock are notorious for leaving crap on your computer that just won't go away. I spent a day discovering this after comparing them and Nexus Dock, which uninstalls clean.

Nexus' lack of third-party modules/plugins/"docklets"/whatever really does hurt. This is mitigated by the preference menu -- Nexus is configurable in many, many ways that OD and RD aren't -- but I made that petty comment about the clock because I spent a lot of time staring at it, knowing that there are dozens of better-designed clock docklets out there.

In the end, the built-in features won. A dock should be able to replace the Windows taskbar (freeing up that monitor space is the only reason I considered these programs), so system tray support is crucial. A docklet for RocketDock approximates the system tray, but the icons don't respond correctly to mouse clicks, and randomly go missing. ObjectDock (free) has similar options. Object Dock Plus ($20) has a system tray that's actually functional, but that's all I can say for it. Last I checked (v1.5), it was impossible for a single ObjectDock to simultaneously show launch icons, tasks, and the system tray -- i.e., to do what the Windows taskbar already does.

Nexus is (once you've tweaked it enough) sleek, efficient and probably the best free dock for Windows.

"great prudct, nice docking features"

February 14, 2011  |  By alanleu

 |  Version: Winstep Nexus Dock 10.9

Pros

free,
works
looks very nice

Cons

not exactly a CON, but if the default setting makes it look like the app docking for the Apple Mac, it'll catch more WOWs more quickly. I had to play with the setting to figure out

Summary

If you wish your PC desktop look like the Apple, this is one of the tool you want to try

"Goes where no dock has gone before..."

January 30, 2011  |  By skagon

 |  Version: Winstep Nexus Dock 10.9

Pros

Easy to customise, even to create your own theme/skin. Lots of options, about virtually everything. Even more, you can get a dock with all the drives in the system, something which no other dock can do. Very light weight, no system slow-down at all.

Cons

Nothing major... or even minor. Just tiny annoyances which get ironed out by the creator, once you report them.

Summary

Bottom line? I've been looking for this specific functionality (auto-hide dock with my drives as icons) ever since Windows 7 beta came out. Finally, I found exactly what I was looking for, and more! Now, on top of that, I can have multiple docks, even sub-docks of docks or shelves, and I've even customised it by making my own theme in a matter of minutes!
Also, the creator is very open to (sensible) suggestions and very cooperative (and a funny guy). What more could anyone ask for?
In my opinion, so TOTALLY worth the $25 it costs. Actually, $25 is a bargain, if you think about it.

"FOUND virus and malware"

January 23, 2011  |  By bob_weaver

 |  Version: Winstep Nexus Dock 10.9

Pros

this is a great program for optimizing your desk top. Nice way to make your windows interface look great.I really like the windows 7 setting that it has just wish there was no viruses

Cons

FOUND two worms that where tring to get into my system and three forms malware. other cons include the space that it takes to run the program

Summary

Found two viruses and three malware forms all right in the download(not + - either). Other cons about this program. Is the way things run once they are installed.. Lets take a look at the interface for this program. It puts things like the clock, wanda(fish),cpu meter ect on your screen with lots of customizing options. The down side to this is that the programs all have to run separately, open your task manager and look for yourself. So needless to say this is going to slow your computer down:( also the way that it is constantly trying to access the web(clock and weather function, updates ect) is super annoying and sometimes has a way of "bitting" you in the keyster . with third party action. Bummer because I love the interface (besides clock ect) it makes you computers desktop look great. But when you look under the hood it is a mess to put it lightly. I give this program 4 stars but because of the viruses and malware that I found that drops it to a 2 here are some specs that I put together
extra start time:---------------------------------------------12.4 sec--------------------
extra shut down time-------------------------------------- 22.4 sec-------------------

"Best Free Dock But With One Flaw"

January 19, 2011  |  By Lance B

 |  Version: Winstep Nexus Dock 10.9

Pros

Comes with great themes, tons of options and it is easy to use. I keep it on top on other windows and thus can hide both status bar and task bar. Don't need them anymore, Nexus does everything and more.

Cons

Can't upload third-party themes as advertised. I have tried dozens of them and so far only one has worked. According to a few forums I have been on, I am not alone and yet there seems to be no solution or explanation coming forward from Winstep.

Summary

So much better than the rest but the third-party theme issue is very disappointing. Also while most the themes that come with it are good, it really needs about another 10 more, keeping in mind at least 3 of the current available themes are horrible. Who would want a dock with a grass background anyway ?

"Great docking software"

January 02, 2011  |  By alan.snider

 |  Version: Winstep Nexus Dock 10.9

Pros

I have been using RocketDock for years, this dock has even more features PLUS it is X64 compat (unlike RocketDock)

Cons

I have had no negatives to report. Great program

Summary

As previously stated, great "OSX" type of dock, you can use it (as I do) in place of the original Win7 desktop by hiding your taskbar
