Veteran computer users know Alt Tab application switching is one of the greatest time-savers since drag and drop. WinGlance makes it even better. This Windows XP application substitutes miniature screenshots for the program icons the Alt Tab window normally displays. The screenshot window also appears when you move the mouse to the bottom-right corner of the screen (which was not the best design choice, since the user might be trying to access an icon in the system tray). This can be extremely handy if you're running multiple instances of, say, Internet Explorer, with e-mail in one window and news in another. However, WinGlance demands a powerful computer. On our Pentium III test system, generating screenshots took several seconds. Also, you'll need a large monitor to see the screenshots clearly. However, if your system measures up and you typically work with several instances of the same program, WinGlance will certainly improve your productivity.

Publisher's description

From UsableLabs.com :

WinGlance is a visualizable Alt+Tab-replacement, task-switching utility with the ability to close a window instantly and to view duration and memory-usage information for each window. WinGlance lets XP users switch from one open window to another with only a click on the full-screen and neatly arranged window-snapshot list. The list can be activated by simply pressing Alt+Tab or pointing the mouse over the lower-right corner of the screen.

"Best alt-tab replacement I have used."

by CableguyTK on August 5, 2006

Pros: The best part of this was that it was last updated in 2004. Some might call this bad since it indicates a slow update schedule. But for this type of software, one which requires a heavy duty machine to run this software, its good. It means it was designed for high powered computers of 2 years ago...and today, normal computers smoke the high powered computers of 2 years ago. So this program should be very fast for anyone. Compare against TopDesk, Entbloess, TaskSwitch Pro, etc. which are built for high powered computers of TODAY. LOL.

    It is very fast.

    Setup is quite easy.

It includes an exclusion list, something that EntBloess and TopDesk do not. I guess if you dont want to see a movie in WMP showing up in the program you can tell it not to.

Cons: Its not free, but its not terribly expensive either. Its cheaper than TopDesk, but a buck more than EntBloess.

Here is why I think WinGlance is the best:

It is practically the same program as TopDesk and Entbloess, but it is much faster and easier to use than both of those programs...and it is quite a bit more responsive than both. And then there are programs which are like TaskSwitch Pro, which is mentioned by one of the other reviewers. Im not a big fan of TaskSwitch Pro. Its a pretty big install, and its slower than the default alt-tab interface, and slower than WinGlance...besides the fact that its not interactive like WinGlance is.

I mean, alt-tab replacement is one area of Windows which isnt a necessity to fool around with...the default alt-tab interface works fine and doesnt need a paid upgrade. However if you are looking for something similar to the Mac Expose type feature, WinGlance, TopDesk and EntBloess are where its at. (Mac Expose is Mac's answer to Windows Alt-Tab). I think in terms of interface, as far as mimicing Mac, you would be better off with TopDesk or EntBloess, but in terms of speed you will want to stick with WinGlance.

"Small, simple, very well mannered, worth the small price."

    by Balder99 on October 28, 2007

Pros: Behaves well with all my software, works with dual monitors, easy on resources, not oversold on features (see publisher website). Can group by application, option to display/not display minimized windows.

Cons: Display could be a bit quicker. I have 2 gb memory, 2 ghz speed and dual core processor. It might not be fast enough on slower machines (give it a try). Maybe that's the price for good behavior. Could use a few more options for activation.

    "WinGlance is brilliant!"

    on May 8, 2004

Summary: WinGlance is absolutely brilliant compared with other Alt-Tab replacement software! I give the developer credit for creating a somewhat look-alike Expose way for Windows. While I did find it visually appealing and quite simple to use with all the pe... read more >>
