"Solid program, but not dazzling"

January 18, 2010  |  By beagoldbuyer

 |  Version: Web Page Maker 3.1

Pros

Easy layout
basic tools
intuitive
scrolling marque is a neat bonus
can upload custom images for nav buttons-inactive and mouseover and even sound on mouseover

Cons

"Word art" feature doesnt work on my download
Would like some more features
Cant upload active image for nav buttons

Summary

This program works a lot like the yahoo sitebuilder program that yahoo provides if you host a site with them. The problem with yahoo is that their software flakes out and loses content and images that you included in your site, and then the operators can't say why other than their tool is outdated. Okay so, foget yahoo, this program is very comfortable to use, and especially if you already understand wysiwyg editors. The tools are mostly easy to find although I havent found anything about optimizing for search engines.
Another reviewer listed that you can order your page paragraphs for optimizing although they will appear the same on your site, the search engine will see them a different order. That way you can give the bot the meat of the page first for optimal placement.
The scrolling marquee feature is a neat addition to basic tools. However it would be nice to see some other ideas like this too-some things that set it apart from basic wysiwyg editors. Probably the best thing is simply to use a good wysiwyg program with other tools like GIMP and flash makers and gif makers.
I cant get the word art feature to work, it keeps giving me an error message. but this tool would allow me to build a new website or rebuild (or import-but i dont see that feature either though it has been reviewed to exist) my old site (since yahoo sitebuilder is proprietary and warns that their sitebuilder sites wont export properly) and host it with somebody cheaper than yahoo. It would pay for itself rather quickly and especially if you figure in the bugs that I hope to avoid by not using yahoo.

"I'm Back to Rave Some More!"

December 31, 2009  |  By suthnautr

 |  Version: Web Page Maker 3.1

Pros

I am loving this program more and more even after using it for almost 8 years now

Cons

With each new version the "cons" are only a wish list of what features I'd like to see in the next update. This program has only gotten better!

Summary

If you've ever wanted to create a site with in-line (lined up vertically & horizontally) images that can be clicked on to open up the pictures in new windows then this feature all by itself may make Web Page Maker worth it and I'll tell you why. What you do to make an image gallery is go to the menu "Insert", "Image Objects", "Photo Gallery" and then select the images you want. You then select any images you want to include & tell Web Page Maker how large or small you want the thumbnails to be and whether or not you want a caption underneath. Then you drag the edges of the box of images so they line up either all vertically or to spread out horizontally and vertically aligned on the page. Let's say you want to add product images to be paid for with PayPal, for instance.

Ok, so you've added your images and made them all go down the page on the left hand side. Each image is clickable to open up larger in a new window. Now you add your PayPal button by going to the menu "Insert", "Add Ons", "Pay Pal Buttons" (which you don't have to code from scratch for each product because you've entered your account info once into the PayPal info area).

Now to make that idea even more appealing to people who have problems with Pay Pal's lack of individual shipping by weight and zip code I'll tell you a secret. If you go to auctioninc.com/info/page/shopping_cart (about $4.95 a month, first month free, no obligation) they have a shipping calculator plug in that works with PayPal. What that means is no more frustration shipping locally or thousands of miles away. Of course you can set up any shopping cart system in Web Page Maker that you want - no matter how complicated it is, but why bother?

Web Page Maker's PayPal Button creator makes it super easy to create a new payment item for basic fixed shipping. If you need more complex options, e.g. the Auction Inc shipping calculator then simply use PayPal's web site button set up so you can add in all the other stuff (like individual product weight and dimensions), then copy and paste one of them into your Web Page Maker document that way. Then copy the button you created and paste it near each of the products you're selling and edit the buttons' product name, price, weight & dimensions for each product.

So setting up a site that sells hundreds (or even thousands) of different items where anyone can click an image of the product & see a larger image, and shipping is calculated based on size, weight and zip code is easy.

The Image Gallery is also really cool. With Rollover Buttons and creative use of the Image Gallery (even for just one image!) this program is a winner. Here's a sample of a site you can check out www.riversiderv1.com made with Web Page Maker

Although I did build the above web site (using Web Page Maker) I'm only putting the location of the site here as an example of what Web Page Maker can do. I have nothing to gain from the shipping calculator site, but mention it only because it's helpful to everyone in small business trying to solve the most common problem with getting online payments to work right.

Web Page Maker takes practice but the good news is that you can get started right away! You are going to need to use other programs for graphics etc because no web design program does everything for you, and those that try fail.

 |  Version: Web Page Maker 3.1

Pros

I use this program since 2005 with full satisfaction. My website is entirely built with it. And if you do not like it, it is my fault, not that of the program. Check: www.dehadeln.com

Cons

Unless you are after a still more sophisticated web site, this program gives full satisfaction and can be modeled to each ones needs

"Very Good WYSIWYG GUI Program With Plenty of Features"

October 25, 2009  |  By Helguson

 |  Version: Web Page Maker 3.1

Pros

Auto backup of whole site (or sections). Universal automatic link changes when page name changes. Include elements on all pages or just some. Re-order page elements. Built in flash slide show, add HTML or script elements, & 1 click iFrames a breeze.

Cons

No image wrap and text doesn't expand well when users increase text size in browser (so use size 12 font). This means you must take care when splitting text around images. CSS is on each page (slight clutter issue) but basic sites do validate.

Summary

As a Network Administrator (and not a web developer) I had used WebPage Maker Version 2 for years and was impressed. Each page needed it's own WebPage Maker file, so if you had a site with 300 pages, you had to have 300 separate files, and there were other problems. The New version is a dream - it creates the whole site within one single file. What's more, you can split a really large site up into folders on the web by creating more than one file, one for each section of the site, and just assign a different name for each upload area.

WebPage Maker has a built in Spell Checker which is really nice. It does lack the ability to create H1, H2, H3 etc. tags, but you can manually insert a block of HTML. I'd like to see that change in one of the next updates to have it done with the click of a button, but right now it's not there.

A few interesting things about the newer version 3.x are that you can re-order the page elements which is really cool if you do any SEO (Search Engine Optimization). This means that you can have five paragraphs (numbered 1 through 5) showing in one order for the site visitor - lets say paragraph 3, then 2, then 1, then 5 and finally 4 - but for the search engine spider you can show them in a different order. You can also put all of the text elements at the top of the order, and have all the flash, images and shopping cart code etc down at the bottom so the search engines get the pure meat of the text quickly.

You can also choose to upload each page or all pages as file extension .html, .htm, .shtml, .asp or .php and in the page properties instruct the program not to include the name of the generator (so your competition won't know you're using WebPage Maker - you can put any other "generator" in the header section that you choose.

You can create an image slide show quickly and easily (works best with all images starting out the same size and orientation - either portrait or landscape), resize the slide show by just dragging the edge - and you can create titles for each image with separate links to other pages in your site or to other websites - and use buttons so they can choose which image they want to see.

There are a bunch of built in canned flash effects like snowflakes and a little clock etc. but inserting flash, javascript, YouTube videos etc. etc. is super easy. Let's say you have some javascript for your sitemeter (so you can track visitors) or for your Google Analytics that you have to add to all the pages on your site. You add it to one page, right click and choose "include on all pages". Later, if you want to replace the sitemeter script with a different tracker (or add a second tracker) you just paste it into one box and it puts it on every single page automatically. You can also choose exactly which pages you want that code on by unchecking the pages where you don't want it.

Another really nice feature about the Version 3.x is that you can create a multitude of different types of text links that highlight in different ways. So if you want one that highlights the words in yellow, green, blue or red when the site visitor places his mouse over the text, you can do that.

WebPage Maker is the hands down easiest way to quickly build a professional looking website that I know of. I've tried dozens of programs - Kompozer, Dreamweaver, Front Page and others. You will need months of practice, maybe longer, to learn all of the features available in the new WebPage Maker, but you'll also be able to almost immediately get a good looking, functional, fairly simple site up faster with WebPage Maker than with anything else out there. WebPage Maker also re-sizes your great big oversized images for you when it uploads your pages to your site! That means no more giant pictures that take forever to load... Oh, and you can "import" pages from other web sites on the internet. That really comes in handy sometimes. For $49 bucks there's no way you can lose.

"No updates in January, you got to be kidding me"

October 22, 2009  |  By sgo64

 |  Version: Web Page Maker 3.1

Pros

It's easy to use without knowing HTML code. Makes great basic websites, great price.

Cons

NO UPDATES SINCE JANUARY, Support doesn't not respond to e-mails. Typo's, bad in grammer in help files written by microsoft. ( they are often no help). Multiple trips to help files needed due to poorly writting help files

Summary

It's a great program for a begginer web designer. To bad it doesn't grow as your web programming needs grow. I"ve owned it for several years and there have been very FEW updates. Support doesn't answer e-mails. When trying to design a moderately complex web page, the help files DO NOT answer your questions. It leaves you wondering why you are using this product to begin with. Did I mention they have not updated this since January???

"Good Wesite Design Software for the novice."

October 08, 2009  |  By rugscrubba7

 |  Version: Web Page Maker 3.1

Pros

Great for people who cannot code Html. Lots of features for a WYSIWYG program.

Cons

Has some minor limititaions that dont detract from the programs value. See Summary.

Summary

Overall a very good program for the people who have no knowledge of html. Very full featured and flexible. Things I like: The ability to import (not allways perfect) websites, either from the web or your harddrive. Support for flash video or slideshows. The ability to automaticly resize inserted images (for smaller size and faster loading of site) as well as convert text to images. Support for Meta tags. Spell checker.

Things I dont like: No ability to directly edit code. Doesnt seem to be able to upload files to any other directory other than root of server. I wish insertable shapes had smoother outlines. Included templates are few and fairly simple.

For what this program does - it does it very well. Highly recommended.

"Designed for some who cannot use a computer"

September 15, 2009  |  By Mrate

 |  Version: Web Page Maker 3.1

Pros

It places text and picture on the screen. It great for the dumb of the dumbest. But it is not complex and is usable unlike a produce call Site Spinner where just moving picture seems to be a hardship. The templates are good but there are so few.

Cons

Imported pages are just a mess, the text needs to be edited by a bad form of ms-write, can not add or edit code unless exported. Hardly any features. No spell check. The list goes on and on.

Summary

There are over 200 better freeware products like Pablo software product which seem to be the same as this but with all the features. Maybe I just totally wrong and dumb down products are given a better result in today's market. These guys have reinvented the wheel with no tires and making million;s.
