While not the most glamorous of applications, WS_FTP comes loaded with professional-minded features for serious file-transfer tasks. New for version 2007 are improved protocols for portable drives and integrated searches with Google, Copernic and Windows.

The more refined XP-style look found in the 9.0 release remains intact, but the sheer number of features makes it confusing and difficult to execute simple tasks. To the app's credit, it does give you several options for customizing the interface to your specific tastes, and drag-and-drop functionality makes file transfers intuitive. We like WS_FTP's exceptional image-handling capabilities. The included thumbnail previews are nice, as is Active Edit, which lets you edit and remote images and other document types in a third-party app. Though the preview tool is convenient, it still stumbles on some formats such as Flash.

In addition to 256-bit encryption, the program also supports HTTP and HTTPS transfers, as well as SOCKS 4.0 and 5.0 proxies. You also get the ability to manage multiple-client SSL certificates. Other notable features include e-mail notifications, and "workspaces", which let you recall specific views of different servers. Overall, WS_FTP Professional is a feature-wealthy application that will indulge power users. Newbies should check out the leaner and cheaper WS_FTP Home edition.

WS_FTP is a standard FTP client for Windows sockets. The graphical interface was designed with the novice FTP user in mind, but there are also advanced features for power users (see screen shot). WS_FTP Pro provides advanced support for handling frequently visited FTP sites, time-outs, port numbers, passive file transfers, and firewalls. It also automatically resumes interrupted transfers and includes file maintenance options to help prevent overwriting files. The program also enables remote-to-remote transfers and has command-line support for automating file maintenance operations.

Newer features included enhancements to both the Classic and Explorer interfaces, such as a wizard for adding new sites. Other features include a site manager that stores FTP sites and site configurations in folders for easy reference, drag-and-drop support in the WS_FTP Pro Classic interface, quick connect for immediate connection to new FTP sites, recursive delete, auto re-get, improved firewall support, and automatic detection of the AMOS TCP/IP, VxWorks, and GCOS 6 HVS AIX host types. It also offers a graphical interface for connecting to FTP sites and a bonus FTP utility pack containing three advanced tools: a Find utility that lets users search an FTP site for files that match the user's criteria, a powerful scripting utility for automating file transfers and management through a series of WS_FTP commands, and a Synchronize utility for synchronizing or mirroring FTP or Web sites.
