Vegas Pro is Sony Creative Software's professional HD video editing and production suite. It's pro-class in capabilities and it isn't cheap. But it's hardly the most expensive, making Vegas Pro a viable option for sophisticated amateurs, too. Vegas Pro 11 (Build 7) adds GPU acceleration for OpenCL-supported devices and some bug fixes. Vegas Pro comes in separate versions for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows; we tried the 32-bit version.
For pros: From its busy but efficient interface to features like stereoscopic 3D, integrated audio management, scripting, and multicamera support, Vegas Pro is squarely aimed at production and broadcasting professionals.
Awesome options: Vegas Pro is packed with a wide range of features and options like customizable views, snapping, automatic crossfades and quickfades, ignore event grouping, disc burning, and print to HDV tape. There's even a built-in metronome.
Audio, too: Vegas Pro has top-quality audio tools, including multitrack recording and editing, a Mixing Console, Audio Bus Tracks, and options like Bypass All Audio FX.
Big Bens: Vegas Pro retails for $499.95. You can spend a lot more and do no better, plus you can try Vegas Pro for free for 30 days. But the price is still formidable.
Registration required: Maybe what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but you must register Vegas Pro just to try it, and the process requires not only name and email but also a street address.
Vegas Pro 11 impressed us in every way, but we're glad you can try before you buy. Video pros will know pretty quickly if Vegas Pro meets their needs, but talented amateurs and others can put the 30-day trial to good use before they lay out the cash.
Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Vegas Pro (32-bit) 11 Build 700.

Easy Import of clips, photos and photos into bins. With a rock solid media management system you can gather clips in various ways to suit you style. Intuitive drag-n-drop style of video editing, you can automatically preview your media clips, pre-edit them and send them to the timeline. You can automatically have each clip fade into the next. The screen is also very customizable and you can extend the display over two screens and preview on a third. With 99 tracks of audio and video you can create composite tracks for layered special effects. With numerous effects and a powerful graphics editor there is no limit to what you can do. Not limited to "bundles" that come with it, you can add most professional plug-in's onto it. You can manipulate tracks quickly and easily as well as add an effect to an entire track, like color correction. It also has the most powerful audio editor of any editor - professional or amateur.
While you can make very nice DVD's and BluRay disks directly to disk, Vegas Pro is a stand alone PROFESSIONAL editor You must use another program to create DVD's or BLuRay's if you want a MENU structure. Also, version 11 had Crash specific bugs for many users who did not have the correct video card as well as the correct amount of computing power to make it work. Latest version 12 is much better. ALL video editors crash occasionally as NOTHING is harder on a modern computer system. As you become experienced you will learn that you need a powerful computer to make videos.
All versions of Vegas including Movie Studio and Vegas Pro edit video with the same workflow and style. Once you start using it, it becomes very intuitive. Note that this Vegas Pro 11 product is highly rated by its user base even though not as high by the raters. The reason is that the people who use this product have used other editors and KNOW it is better and more powerful. Personally speaking, I have used every PROFESSIONAL EDITOR from Media Composer, Liquid and Premier Pro to Final Cut Pro as well as the juniors like Pinnacle, Cyberlink, AVID Studio and yes Movie Make (my 1st editor). After ten years, I have settled on Vegas Pro as my #1 editor as the more I use it the more I am stunned by its power and capabilities as well as speed and productivity. It is relatively inexpensive if you get the Student Version or upgrade from Movie Studio. I wish I started using IT ten years ago.
