"Best unlocker I've seen. Not malware but evil installer"

    March 18, 2014   |   By fibrofogged

    Version: Unlocker (64-bit) 1.9.1

    Pros

The program itself is 5-star; it has served me very well for years. Great when you need to delete/rename/move a file or eject media safely, but are blocked. Finds the root cause fast; reduces the need to reboot.

Unlocker is nearly always able to quickly tell me ALL the processes that are holding on to a particular file or folder tree. I then exit those programs normally (for me, Search Everything is often the culprit), then run Unlocker again. When the list is empty, I eject the media or delete the file. I personally avoid harsh tactics like the Unlock and Kill features, though they've worked well for me too (they are rarely necessary).

    Cons

The sneaky, evil, misleading installer tries to trick you into installing the "recommended" accompanying bloatware. (I guess that's how he makes money from the free tool.)

Only CAREFUL users should attempt to install this!

    Summary

I've become rather dependent on this tool over the years; it works well. But its installer tries very hard to trick you into installing bloatware along with it. Currently (Mar 2014), the Yahoo Toolbar is labeled in an especially misleading way. Do NOT click blindly--read every install dialog carefully! To give you an idea, just now I installed it and had to do 5 extra steps to skip/decline:
+ chose English, OK, Next, I Agree.
    - Clicked Skip! (clicked neither "express" nor "custom" install of Yahoo Toolbar).
    - - Clicked Decline to confirm the Skip.
    - Clicked Skip (Caramava)
    - Clicked Skip (Convert Files for Free)
    - Clicked Decline (Optimizer Pro)
+ Clicked Next (confirm install location)
+ To be safe, I unticked "Check for Unlocker updates", but ticking "Explorer extension" is quite helpful.
    + Clicked Install.

    "MALWARE*********"

    February 14, 2014   |   By RonInNewYork

    Version: Unlocker (64-bit) 1.9.1

    Pros

    It did work...

    Cons

but it also installed 2 other products and reset my IE home page to a malware site conduit.com (search for malware conduit.com and you'll get some more info on it) and also reset the Firefox search to conduit.com THIS IS VERY BAD!!!!!!!! IF I could give 0 stars I would.

    Summary

DO NOT DOWNLOAD. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS PRODUCT!!! AND IF YOU DO UNINSTALL IT AND THE OTHER APPS IT INSTALLS AND THEN RUN SEVERAL VIRUS CHECKS!

"Program Works, you'll still get Malware with it."

    January 16, 2014   |   By TrippedB

    Version: Unlocker (64-bit) 1.9.1

    Pros

    The Program Works

    Cons

It comes with Malware even if you say no to installing the Toolbar.

    Summary

I had not choice to download this to get rid of a file from Origin's EA Sims 3. Couldn't delete it. Decided to give Unlocker a try. Ask if you want to install the toolbar of course I said "Hellz No!" unchecked it and installed it the program. It worked though went back on the internet pop ups from below and on the side. No toolbar but pop ups for everything. Had to us Malwarebytes. Babylon A PUP and many of his lackeys. Yes I said no to it but guess what it install it anyways so. Yes the program works though you still get Malware with it. It's a pretty crappy trade.
If the Malware is with the Program or the Installer? I don't know. Would like to find out.

    "WARNING - MALWARE MALWARE"

    June 03, 2013   |   By T-Sweet

    Version: Unlocker (64-bit) 1.9.1

    Pros

The old Unlocker didn't come with Malware

    Cons

The new Unlocker comes with Malware. Don't install. My AVG virus scanner picked up most of it. I should have read these warnings below but I trusted the old Unlocker (which was good) and expected no Malware.
Don't believe the comments that say that you can opt out. This is because my AVG virus scanner detected Malware DURING THE DOWNLOAD.....BEFORE I CLICKED INSTALL. Hence, I had no choice to opt out. Hence...I didn't bother with the install.

    Summary

    Don't install.

"Works well on x64 - no malware"

    December 16, 2012   |   By boonalong

    Version: Unlocker (64-bit) 1.9.1

    Pros

Most of the time you can bypass the Windows "File is in use" message to unlock a file, particularly when Explorer is the process in question.

    Cons

Once in awhile I'll run into a stubborn process that just won't let go, hence a reboot.

    Summary

I'd suggest doing a little research before becoming Chicken Little, and screaming "Malware". Unlocker installs nothing without your permission. You can opt out of any toolbars it offers.
If you blindly click through the install process, or get an infected installer from a dubious download site (not CNET or the developer's site), then the fault is yours.

    February 15, 2012   |   By RSonCNet

    Version: Unlocker (64-bit) 1.9.1

    Pros

Works most of the time and allows you to do what you need to do even when Windows is getting in the way.

    Cons

Does not work all the time

    Summary

Very useful whenever that useless and annoying Windows error comes up. This application lets you tell Windows to stuff it and that's always a good thing :)
