SubRosaSoft DesktopEarth for Mac

Publisher's Description

From SubRosaSoft.com Inc:

SubRosaSoft DesktopEarth downloads real time global cloud maps, then superimposes them on the map of your choice (political, geographic, elevation etc...) and sets it as your desktop picture.
If left running it will update this map every 3 hours.
A fascinating toy and useful tool.
You can now select whether the map is placed on the desktop in letterbox format - or if fills the screen. If you choose letterbox format you can now select a colour (instead of just black) to trim the image with.
Added a caption to show when the map was last updated, and another to show where the map was centered on (eg; 179 degrees east). Changed some of the code to give better fault tolerance on the map downloading and the popup menu for changing maps.

What's new in this version:

  • Clicking anywhere on the map will now center the view on that location.
  • Can now save the image to anywhere on your system (file menu - save)
  • Can now copy the image to the clipboard
  • Can now set transparency for the cloud overlay

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions - keep em coming :)

"ok great, one little correction still needed."

    Summary

I'm a registered user and an happy user too. The problem in the full size has been fixed but now, on my configuration, (1280x1024) in the full size setting the image ends up without including the full globe on the longitude: I have Italy in the center, and half of USA on one side and half of Asia on the other. Also, if I put the sun or moon image on a corner, it is not showed. Maybe this could be due to the fact that I have a second video card (in fact I would appreciate also to be able to put the image there too). thanks anyway, great soft.

    "I love it!"

But I have a few more suggestions since we finally found a freeware developer that responds to his users so much! I like my desktop pictures to be displayed 'actual size' or 100% so because otherwise my eyes can see evidence of scaling in the pixels. I do this easily now with the Save option and then setting the picture as a desktop in a normal way using the 'centered' option in System prefs, but if you could render the map bigger so it would fill my screen vertically so there'd be no scaling it up I'd love it! My screen is 1280x854 but some people have even bigger ones!

This is a good piece of software, and it's free (as in beer, or speech), no matter what whining trolls say otherwise. I didn't gve SubRoseSoft money to use it, and as my e-mail address is freely available from any number of places including my own websites I hardly place great value on it.

Keep up the good work, DesktopEarth is a fun, quality piece of software and hopefully some less tactful posters here won't discourage further development.

Here are some further suggestions for this fine product:

The centering should again be remembered between updates.
It would be great to have the possibility to center the map before downloading.
Maybe it is not necessary to download the clouds at each start of the program.
The latter two things could be implemented by providing a ``download'' button.

As a layman, I would think that these things should be easy to implement.

Anyway, a great thank you to the developers and SubRosaSoft
for letting us use this great software for free, as well as for their
    constant improvement of the program.

    "Cool"

    Summary

    These new features are cool.

Its great to see a developer that adds features as they are asked for.

Pretty pictures seem to be one of the cooler things to have particularly when they are live.

A couple of features I would like to see:

1/ Have it autosave into a specified folder.
(I think this should be easy to do since it can already do it manually)

2/ Night and Day / Darkness and light

Otherwise it does just what it says it does :) gotta love that

I asked them to remove my e-mail address as soon as I registered and they sent me an e-mail confirming it was removed pretty much straight away.

    LOVE FREE SOFTWARE !!!

Thanks for the great freeware. Not only did I not pay for it, but I was never asked for any money, just my email address, something I give out almost as often as my social security number these days anyway. The best part is that no matter how many features people request here the author adds them within a day or two. I sure wish all programs were developed, distributed and functioned like this one. I think the author deserves a big thanks and five stars from every reviewer here, but instead half of them give him grief??? What is the world coming to. Ungrateful bast**ds. Just keeps getting better and better!

    "Freeware.. huh"

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
When I make freewares, I make them free. I don't force the user to enter his/her personal details OR pay $5 to use them. That is an abuse of the word. Call it either shareware or demo, but not freeware.
As for insulting your users, that is going to earn you a lot of good karma. If your program works like crap on my configuration -as I described-, I have the right to say so.

And for the "just curious but what did you EXPECT it to do ?!?" well, it can do as much as it likes, by previewing what it would do before doing it, and as long as I can *UNDO* it. But of course you'd need to be an experienced mac programmer to know that, instead of someone gathering a spam list.

You know, you'd have a LOT more slack if you had made it a true freeware - or shareware, as long as you CALL it so -.

"Sweet! But maybe an auto update?"

AWESOME. Looks beautiful. Easy to use. Frickin' sweet.

Anyone got suggestions on how to applescript this to update on a regular basis? Keeping it running uses a constant 25% of my G4/550...but I can just run it to update it and then close it. Most excellent...but too manual. Thoughts?
