CNET Editors' review
Load this application to hide the Windows Start button, but expect little gain from that extra inch of space. Start Killer has no interface except for a single options dialog. This program simply removes the Windows Start button from your desktop. It can load on system start or as an application. Users can still use CTRL-ESC to open the Start menu after using this utility. Start Killer can be configured to disable the Start menu. We didn't find much use for removing the Start button, but some users may find it saves them from accidentally clicking the menu open. This is a program in search of a need. Though every level of user can operate Start Killer, only experienced users need the extra inch of taskbar space freed by this freeware application.Publisher's Description

"Excellent!"
Version: Start Killer 2.3
Pros
Does exactly what it says, no more, no less.
Cons
None whatsoever.
Summary
Since "My Start Button" (which let's you change the name of the Start button) doesn't work with XPs "Classic" theme, I decide to download this to hide the Start button altogether.
To access the menu, I just press the Win key (the one with the Windows logo) on my Dell keyboard. -
"Now that is slick"
Version: Start Killer 2.3
Summary
The "Start Menu" has annoyed since two days after Windows 95 was released. While the menu has evolved into a more useful too with future releases, now I have customized so much that the Start Button is rarely used. "Start Killer" is just what I was looking for.
