Publisher's description
From Spiceworks :Spiceworks is a free, browser-based tool that manages up to 250 network devices. It enables you to quickly and conveniently inventory the hardware, software, and patches that reside on your network; monitor your network for new software, low disk space, offline servers, and rogue users; report easily on the information you need to manage your network. Now available in beta version, Spiceworks IT Desktop is an agent-less monitoring application that takes less than five minutes to get up and running.
Note: Beta or prerelease software is not intended for inexperienced users, as the software may contain bugs or may potentially damage your system. We strongly recommend that users exercise caution and save all mission-critical data before installing or using this software.

Version: Spiceworks Desktop 0.8.3616 beta
"Finally a "Free," network management tool"
Pros: I've been using the SpiceWorks Beta for about 3 weeks now and I am highly impressed.
SpiceWorks is accurate, has a plethora of information, and has the ability to filter and report on just about every piece of data collected, and then export it to a text file, excel file, or a .pdf! There are many "canned," reports or you can build your own as simple or as complex as you like.
It uses standard, non proprietary protocols, and requires no loading of third party software on client machines.
It has an intuitive and attractive UI. The supporting ads are not intrusive, nor do they distract from the functionality of the product.
The SpiceWorks staff is friendly, helpful and live to listen to what we administrators need in the tool to do our jobs, and then modify the product to fit those needs. They are truly trying to build a product directly based on the feedback from the beta users.
If you ever wanted to build a customized network tool, this is your chance to help the SpiceWorks team develop a product that can benefit YOU directly. I've submitted a couple suggestions to the feature request forum and had my suggestion added in the following update one week later!
If you manage a small to mid sized network, I HIGHLY recommend you look at this product. (No one is paying me to say this, other than removing an allocation of money from my budget that I would need to purchase, license and maintain a network management tool of this quality.)
Cons: It's still a Beta, but all software starts there.

"Excellent network management console."
Pros: Spiceworks is an excellent free network management program. Simply download, disable the Windows firewall, and let it discover the details of you network. It's exactly the tool we have been looking for, but hadn't found yet.
Cons: It's in beta at the moment, but the development team is very responsive to user input.

"SPiceWORKS ROCKS. Fo rsmall LANS and low budgets !"
Pros: Hey. the ABSOLUTE first MANAGEMENT product to try and help administer LANS without doing a HUGE open-source effort.
download, scan, and it works.
It's still being developed, so it's a beta work in progress BUT
ANYTHING at the small lan can help!
Cons: As said,it's a work in progress. To quote the beatles (It's getting better all the time...)

Version: Spiceworks Desktop 0.8.3616 beta
"Comprable to big name asset management/inventory solutions"
Pros: While designed for "small LANs," SpiceWorks has performed considerably well in my disparate, 250+ workstation environment. I grabbed this tool after reading about it in Network World magazine and have been pleased ever since. This is the first free product that does enterprise class reporting I have used. The user interface is clean and well organized. The canned reports will do most of what you need, while it still has the ability to create customized reports. The method of updating SpiceWorks is painless. Just the occasional restarting of the app is all it takes. It is in beta atm, so new features are being added almost weekly.
Cons: Becuase many of our computers are home built by a previous employee, UIDs that SpiceWorks uses to identify machines often overlap causing errors. This is more of a "lack of standardized equipment" issue within my company than programming oversight on SpiceWorks part. SpiceWorks has put out a fix for this problem, but I have yet to see if it solves this or not.
