Publisher's description
From Symantec :Altiris Software Virtualization Solution (SVS) is a new way to use software. By placing applications and data into managed units called Virtual Software Packages (VSP's), SVS allows you to instantly activate, deactivate, or reset applications and to completely avoid conflicts between applications, without altering the base Windows installation. Say goodbye to "DLL Hell" and "Registry Rot". Getting apps and data into VSP's is simple with an included tool. This version is the same as the regular commercial product shipped by Altiris, minus the server-side components for centralized management. This version includes SP1, "pre-applied". SP1 contains enhancements for Wise Package Studio 7 integration, plus several defect fixes described in the Release Notes (included in the download file).

Version: Software Virtualization Solution 2 SP1
"Powerful, Powerful, Powerful Stuff!"
Pros: This is an awsome program and a powerful, yet so simple idea. It's kind of like trying out aquarium fishes while they're still in the plastic bag from the pet store. You just drop the bag into the aquarium and see how the new fish will look, and if you decide you don't want them for whatever reason, lift them out and they are gone without a trace. No worries that you might have brought home tainted pet store water or overly aggressive predator fish.
This app is very similar, except when you're using a layered app, you can't tell at all, no performance issues or any such. Your system stays mostly clean, as does your registry.
If you have problems, you can either completely get rid of the offending program or reset it, whichever is appropriate. This is a hard to beat idea developed into a very stable and powerful program. And FREE too? Get it, and if you don't understand what it is or how to use it or why, LEARN that, then get it!
Cons: In spite of what has been said, there have been a few programs I installed in a layer, then deleted the layer (after deactivating it) and installed the program again, and it "remembered" it's install path. This should not be possible unless some registry info slipped through to the base system somehow. Also, a few programs still had their start menu folders visible even after the layer was deactivated. All this means is that the program isn't perfect yet (or maybe it was something I did/didn't do). But it's still more than worth it and garners a very strong recommendation.

Version: Software Virtualization Solution 2 SP1
Pros: YOU CAN INSTALL A PROGRAM IN AN INDIPENDET LAYER. WITHOUT REBOOTING WINDOWS YOU CAN SWITCH ON OR OFF THE LAYER. WHEN A LAYER IS SWITCHED OFF, IT IS LIKE THE PROGRAM HAVE NEVER BEEN INSTALLED! YOU CAN EXPORT THE LAYER AND IMPORT IT ON ANOTHER PC, RESET THE LAYER TO THE FIRTS INSTALLATION STATUS, MANAGE EVERY LAYER. EASY TO USE, GREATLY SUPPORTED BY THE WEBSITE.
Cons: NONE

Version: Software Virtualization Solution 2 SP1
Pros: Virtualization allows you to run a program without it being able to actually interact directly with your OS. Have a problem? Fine. Reset the application and it is back to the way it was when it was installed.
Cons: Sometimes slower, but not by much, than a normal installation.

Version: Software Virtualization Solution 2 SP1
Pros: This is an awesome program that captures downloads of new software in a bubble both for protection from it and from yourself. You can test out software with a little less fear of what might be lurking with it. It will instal your software for you in a single capture and the capture will catch any changes it makes to anything on your cpu and then save it to its virtual image. You can then activate or deactivate the layer as you see fit without compatibility issues and providing a safey net. You can always delet the layer which seems like it should be the cleanest uninstall you could get. It can also be used to capture changes made by you to a program and if you dont like the result you can reset them instantly.
This is a free program, you will have to get a product key from their website but you only have to click that option in the installation of the software. Worth checking out and experimenting with.
Cons: Very simple interface however, there are alot of options. The download comes with over 70 pages of Adobe Acrobat info on the procedures.
Sometimes opens slow
Will only maximize or minimize, I cant seem to get the window just to resize.

Version: Software Virtualization Solution 2 SP1
Pros: I'm the SVS Product Manager, so I'm prejudiced. But when I first saw SVS, I thought, "ever since Windows 95, Microsoft has been forcing us to drive an automatic. Now I can take back control of my machine again! Now *I* decide what's there and what isn't."
