This powerhouse FTP client takes some getting used to, but you'll be glad you did. Don't be alarmed by the cramped, multipane Windows Explorer-like interface. You can customize the toolbars and windowpanes however you like. With the Local Browser window visible, SmartFTP supports drag-and-drop transfers like those on basic FTP clients. But its real power lies deeper within its option menus, where you'll find CHMOD remote file-attribute modification, background file transfers, multiple FTP connections, passive-mode transfers, site-to-site transfers (FXP), and connections via proxy or SSL. Using the Global Queue window, you even can schedule downloads or uploads to more than one server. SmartFTP may overwhelm beginners, but it's a natural for intermediates on up. SmartFTP allows you to transfer files across the Internet. It features an Explorer-like, customizable interface and supports drag-and-drop functions. Multiple FTP connections can be opened at the same time, and you can copy files from one remote host to another (FXP). Remote-host directory information is cached for future viewing, and FTP URLs are supported. Other features include a Favorites list; the ability to resume broken downloads; a global history; background transfers; proxy support; a passive transfer mode; and the ability to perform recursive downloads, uploads, and deletes. This is a great program. Have had no problems whatsoever. I like that it is has a windows-like feel to it so it is easy to master. Also, most of the features can be moved or taken off the screen if you don't need all the bells n' whistles.

While at first glance it's not real intuitive, the product is actually very good. It has lots of options, and with a little study time, you will find that you can easily tailor it to your own needs. From that point on, it rocks!

I downloaded ver 1 & used it for free, for noncommercial uses, exactly as advertised. After 1 year, my ver 1 program stopped loading in, so I emailed the SmartFTP people, who RECOMMENDED that I download ver 2.0.995.14. I followed their advice, only to discover that in this version you now have to purchase a license to upload files! Well, gee whiz, it doesn't say that anywhere in the product description!! When I emailed the SmartFTP people again, and mentioned that my use is noncommercial, their answer was "Technical support is available for licensed customers only. Nobody can provide free support for a free product." So the only support they were willing to provide me was to get me to download a product that they knew I couldn't use as advertised!!! Sounds illegal, doesn't it? So now I am uninstalling ver 2. Wave goodbye to this potential customer, 'Smart'FTP people!

Pros
This ftp client is very intuitive, it's very easy to figure out how it works without having to comb through lots of technical jargon. It also has a LOT of customization that you can look up if you choose to, or just use it "out of the box" for greatest simplicity. It's quick loading, the UI is awesome, it's absolutely the best ftp client I have used. (I even like it better than the expensive ones I've used.)

I'm a longtime user of SmartFTP. The latest version (v2.0) is a step backward. I log in to the same ftp site using different credentials. With 2.0, the app appends a label to the FTP address; usually the label reflects the userid used. Sometimes, the label ends up not matching the userid used.
For example: "ftp.smart.com - joe" is tied to userid "peter" and password "h1den"
If you want to correct this discrepancy by modifying the label, you can't -- you are stuck with it! Now every time you log in to ftp.smart.com as Peter, the address field will automatically switch to "fto.smart.com - joe". So useless!
This whole label thing is a mess and brings more confusion than any good.
