This conversion application earns points for its multitude of supported formats but falters due to its miserly trial restriction. Smart Audio Converter's smooth blue interface is both pleasant to look at and simple to understand at first glance. The program supports nearly 20 audio codecs, from popular ones such as MP3, WAV, and WMA, to lesser-known ones such as A-LAW, VOX, and G723. You can of course configure the audio quality of your new tracks and apply VBR compression where appropriate, but Smart Audio Converter lacks even a basic audio player and can't normalize files. In our tests, speed wasn't an issue, though the fact the demo only will convert 60 percent of any given file seems like a pretty serious problem. Considering how many free audio-conversion apps are available to consumers, we'd guess this one will mainly appeal to those who prefer more exotic audio codecs.
