Editors' Review

+
This interesting screensaver doubles as a science experiment. SETI@home (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence at Home) uses the idle time of hundreds of thousands of computers to analyze data about radio or light signals emanating from the vicinity of 30,000 sunlike stars that might indicate intelligent life.

The analysis of the data results in a colorful readout on your desktop, with graphs as well as status displays of your computer's part in the project. The graphics don't move, so you might want to set your monitor to power down after a certain amount of time. The allure, of course, is that your computer may be the one to finally make contact with other life forms. Whether the project succeeds or not, this screensaver provides some nice-looking graphics, a way to get involved in science, and a great conversation starter when others look at your desktop.

"The most useful screensaver there is"

August 07, 2005  |  By Nova278

 |  Version: SETI@home 3.08

Pros

Seti@home is easy to use, saves your screen and works for SETI as well! I like helping to find alien signals rather than watching fish float by. Highly recommend it!

"Hassle-free alien seach software"

December 24, 2004

 |  Version: SETI@home 3.08

Summary

To Max, get yourself a new heatsink boy.

I run Intel's hottest processor, the 2.8 Prescott and with an ambient temp of 30 degrees C. My cpu temp goes up to 48 degrees max from 42 when SETI@Home is running.

I run SETI@Home with BOINC and as of 12/25/04, I am currently ranked 29,172 of 63,956. I've been searching for aliens since July 2003 with no problems at all!

By the way, my heatsink is an Aero Cool DP102. You might want to check that out Max. I had the same problem you had before I changed my sink.

"One small Help for science and mankind that everyone can do"

November 30, 2004

 |  Version: SETI@home 3.08

Summary

This is a very clean no hassle way for the average person to help science out by joining this network of seti users. In the age where desktop computers are ever increasing in power and the normal user doesn't even use a fraction of the computers computing power, let science use your computer while you use it! This program runs in the background or as a screensaver when your computer isn't in use. It is spyware FREE!!! and comes with an uninstall program. It works on all windows based computers and doesn't require much attention, in fact none at all! If you are on broadband let the small program run all the time and set it up to automatically connect to the net for more data retrieval. THe average run time for a block of information is about ten to fifteen hours of time on your computer to complete the data block.

If we can all pitch in and help out when we are not using our computers, put this program on it so at least you're not just wasting energy and computing power! There are years worth of data that needs to be processed that the computers at seti and other places would take a life time to process. By putting this program on your computer you will speed up the process of data compliling and maybe even someday help in discovering a signal from a source not of nature. The screen saver part is actually cool and I sometimes spend ten or so minuits watching it. I've completed almost 500 data packets in the four years I've started putting this program on the computer.

I recomend this for all home users. I also highly recomend that small, medium, and large businesses and corporations put this simple program on their computers so that at night and during idle time their computers are doing something worth while. It only take a little of your system resources, but with the powerful processors out today, you wont see much if any lag between your normal computing needs when you didn't have this on it.

"Better Than Before!!!"

November 29, 2004

 |  Version: SETI@home 3.08

Summary

Make sure you know what you are downloading. This is not just a screen saver! It is supposed to make your CPU hot, it is using all of your extra CPU power when the screen saver is on, that means 100% constantly, and it will create heat. I have been running this program on many computers for years and I have had no problems nor have I had problems with heat or performance. (I have some pretty rigged up comps, on of my CPU fans is duct-tapped on, still runs fine!) If you want to help science, download it, if you want a cool looking screen saver, download it, but if you are so obsessed about your system and are afraid to loose even a little bit of performance, don't even bother.

"Geeky Coolness"

November 19, 2004  |  By boscorocks

 |  Version: SETI@home 3.08

Summary

I finally downloaded this to see what the heck it does. Hmmm not sure what all the info means, but its fun to watch. I have motherboard monitor on at all times. My CPU was running at a steady 36 degrees. Within 5 minutes of running, the temp was up to 40 degrees but remained steady there. I would have to say that there definitely is a temperature impact on the CPU but in my case not significant. I am running an Athlon XP 2800+, 1 gig of RAM and have four case fans.
