Version: RealPlayer SP 10
"Really good, but..."
Pros: A lot of sites I visit cater to RP for viewing videos and Firefox has the RealPlayer plug-in. When installing it asks if you want to install FF with google-toolbar. The "combo" is tops in it's usefulness and configuring is extensive. After registering with an eMail address, you can get daily updates of new music, videos, movie trailers, etc. VERY intuitive app that will dLo & install ANY plug-ins that it needs to do whatever you ask, but...
Cons: ...it seems that everytime you click on a tab you get to view commercials, and a prompt to purchase a "monthly-plan" which gives you unlimited access. Without the RealAccess you are swamped with commercials that actually hinder the usability of the player. There's a lot of freeware that does just as good of a job without the ads...

"Were it not for RealMedia, I'd never use this."
Pros: A must have if you want to view/hear RealMedia, RealVideo or RealAudio files.
Cons: I do like the fact that Microsoft does have some competition in the online media world, but I don't like the software needed to view/hear that media.
RealPlayer is clunky, slow, ugly, and doesn't fit in with the rest of Windows software,
It insists upon "registration" for every user on your computer (including the administrator, which makes absolutely no sense).
The default interface is annoying and is something I turn off immediately. It takes you to real.com and throws videos at you.
The default setting also put RealPlayer in your system tray and pre-selects "alerts" for you. It's annoying and just one more program to clutter your system tray. I disable right after installation (they don't make that easy, either).
And of course you're nagged to purchase the "Pro" edition.
If you don't pay attention, you get other junk installed too (namely a stupid "Try AOL" icon on your desktop and start menu).
Nope, if it weren't for the fact that I want to view RealAudio/Video files on occasion, I'd not even bother installing this sorry excuse for software.
It's really too bad, because RealPlayer for Linux is much nicer and I really like the idea of truly cross-platform media format, but the Windows version of RealPlayer stinks, period.

Pros: better than media player 9, divx player, quick time player.
Cons: occassionally tries to connect to the internet, which i had configured to stop, but it doesn't stop, had to remove that entry from the registry.

"They got from bad to worse."
Summary: From the licence agreement:
6. FIREWALL CONFIGURATION. The Software configures certain firewall applications such that the user is not alerted when the Software requests or receives data necessary for playback of content over the UDP protocol.
...
Once you log into the Software, user information including your user id will be sent in communications with RN's servers.
...
RN may match the user id to personally identifiable information in order to provide you with products, services, and software that you're entitled to and to provide you with relevant information.
...
You consent to the communications enabled and/or performed by the DRM, including automatic updating of the DRM without further notice, despite the provisions of AutoUpdate defined in Section 6(c)
...
If you just want to watch video, get "real alternative" (google for it). It also comes with an excellent replacement for Windows media player (and for real player of course).
Software, that dares to alter firewall settings without my consent, doesn´t make it on my computer. -

Version: RealPlayer SP 10
"The bad far outweighs the good."
Pros: Can play some media files. But no better than other media players.
Cons: Unlike other programs that you contol the installation of, RealPlayer does what it wants to do. Riddled with ad-ware. Takes over your entire media playing system. Assigns almost all media types to it without asking. Will reassign media types on re-boot and every time you use it. Invades your computer like a virus, making it almmost impossible to completely uninstall. Why a reputable company would resort to such unacceptable installation tactics is beyond me. RealNetworks is getting a bad reputation over this - well earned I might add.

Version: RealPlayer SP 10
"Run away from it !!"
Summary: Intrusive installation, incomplete uninstall, known all-time spyware use, bad cluttered sluggish and confusing interface, virus detected and confirmed in some download mirrors, changes your firwall configuration (!!! check steve's review on the 28-Dec-2004), ripping above 96 Kbs not free (useless under), impossible to contact the company (or get an answer), and on top of that, alternatives exist (check "Real Alternative"). Other positive reviews are 90% fakes ("Real company" employees) and the rest are unaware of what happens backdoors. Just don't waste your time with this malicious code software. You have been warned !
