With Quicken 2010, Intuit strives to make its flagship money management application easier to navigate and simpler to set up, thanks to spruced-up visuals and a refreshed start-up wizard. Although already a solid balance-keeper and financial assistant in previous versions, Quicken 2010 adds a few new features to visualize your monthly budget and assets.

The Quicken 2010 product family includes Quicken Starter Edition ($29.99) for tracking budgets and upcoming bills; Quicken Deluxe ($59.99), which includes tools to help you save up for a large purchase; Quicken Premier ($89.99), which helps track investments; Quicken Home and Business ($99.99); and Quicken Rental Property Management ($149.99). We evaluated Quicken Deluxe 2010.

Installation

At almost 70MB, Quicken Deluxe 2010 takes several minutes to install. Installation was painless up to the point when the software junked up our desktop with four icons: the Quicken icon, plus another three unwanted shortcuts advertising a Quicken credit card and other additional services.

Features

Quicken's core features continue doing what they've done for years: chiefly, importing your financial information to help you automatically and manually track your spending and savings. Not just a simple ledger for balancing your bank book, Quicken's additional tools also help alert you to upcoming bills and to your overall budget.

The Quicken 2010 product line gets a prettied-up interface that provides an at-a-glance summary of your finances.

In the 2010 edition, Intuit has applied some cosmetic changes that streamline and simplify the software. One change is a sleeker setup wizard to guide you through the process of importing your financial information, adding bill reminders, and setting up budgets. This wizard is moot if you're a returning user importing years of data from past Quicken versions, but new users will have an easier time getting started with this version than in years past.

A cleaner-looking home screen greets new and returning users, summarizing your financial standing in a glance. Pared-down navigation options also make it easier to find what you need. The most active new feature in Quicken 2010 takes a stab at automatically categorizing your transactions, like assigning Safeway to the Groceries category and your doctor's visits to the Medical category, with a little help from you if there's any doubt. In implementing this feature, Quicken plays catch-up to savvier online management apps, like Mint.com--which Intuit has since snapped up and plans to integrate--and its ilk. A new infographic in Quicken also helps you avoid late fees by displaying both how much cash is left in your coffers and which upcoming bills you should brace for.

Apart from the bill reminder and the autocategorization, it's Quicken's top layer, and select tools, that see the benefit of Quicken's design changes. Scratch the surface, however, and many of the app's second-tier tools--text-heavy calculators, planners, and lists with tiny font--feel as if they haven't been updated for years. The old-school layout may not bother legacy users or those who aren't put off by blocks of texts and charts, but others who have come to expect graphic representation of their data and clean design--say, the likes of former competitor Mint.com--may be inclined to shut the window and move on rather than wade through text.

As with past versions, Quicken Deluxe 2010 pulls in financial data from your banks and savings accounts. There are tools to create graphs and reports to itemize spending and banking, and to plot transactions on a calendar. There's also a debt reduction planner and a tax-planning wizard. Quicken could use a few more online social Net links, too, such as an option to sync reminders to an online calendar.

Intuit isn't blind to consumers' changing expectations in management software, online or offline. Quicken 2010's refurbished look does help, and conservatives who feel more comfortable keeping monetary details stored locally on their PCs rather than encrypted in the cloud lose nothing by downloading a free trial. For strictly online users with only personal finances (not investments, property, or small businesses), Intuit offers a free, online version that's similar to Mint.com. Quicken Online has budgeting, tracking, and reminders, encryption, an iPhone component, and the added capability to prep the data for tax time, assuming you also use one of Intuit's TurboTax products.

If you've used Quicken before, you can import data from previous years. The same goes for anyone switching over from Microsoft Money. With Microsoft Money killed off (additional details), Quicken is the best desktop alternative.

Some tools, like the bill reminder, are still a tad clunky.

Service and support
Quicken support is unchanged from previous years. E-mail support is free, and Intuit promises to respond within a day. Chat help is also free and is available 24-7. Phone assistance is $24.95 per call. However, some support calls are free, such as if you're having problems installing the program or converting data from earlier Quicken versions.

Overall
Quicken Deluxe 2010 remains a useful, if not exciting, management app equipped with rich balancing and budgeting tools. As for the future of Quicken, Intuit's recent acquisition of flashy online finance manager Mint.com could spell the merging of Mint's online budgeting and reminder features. Mint's exciting visual style could also draw younger users to future versions of Quicken, assuming Intuit goes that route, making future versions of the classic, but dated, money manager truly fresh.

"Worked fine for me"

December 26, 2011  |  By kingedking

 |  Version: Quicken Deluxe 2010 19.1.9.16

Pros

Simple to use and fast

Cons

Did not have any realistic cons with 2010 version
except 2012 version sure does not seem to work with the 2010 data files.

Summary

Just spent hours with their chat trying to get the 2010 version data to work with the 2012 program. Nothing worked, including deletes, using their qdelete. I don't hold much hope for it ever working with 2010 data. It works fine with new data, but goes nuts when you try to use a category from a 2010 system. I never should have upgraded!!!

"Quicken gets worse with every new release"

April 22, 2011  |  By sally1966

 |  Version: Quicken Deluxe 2010 19.1.9.16

Pros

Comprehensive for personal finance (if it worked)

Cons

Reports/Graphs not linking properly, w/no fix. Updates is very slow; 2 legged trans are leaving partial trans w/no way to fix. Planning Tab not updating, giving inaccurate projections...should I go on...product is not worth its legacy reputation,

Summary

After 18 years with Quicken I am ready to bail...bugs and issues abound, when I have called CS they know about the issues but have no schedule/release date for fixes. This is no way to treat a loyal customer, I am off to find a replacement!

"Extreme basic flaws, lost data &printing frustrations"

January 04, 2011  |  By ekoomen

 |  Version: Quicken Deluxe 2010 19.1.9.16

Pros

I am too frustrated to even consider any pros

Cons

Data entered into Quicken Online was lost after discontinued. I bought Quicken 2010 believing this would allow me to migrate my data over, but I was not able to import the data in a useful format. And I cannot print from Quicken 2010 in Windows 7.

Summary

Quicken, made by Intuit, seems to go out of their way to make simple functions like data migration (from their own products) and printing difficult tasks. The huge amounts of users who have posted similar frustrations online - dating back to 2007 versions and beyond - suggest that they have track record of using similar issues to force people to buy upgrades (which do not always solve the problem).

If there was a software police, this company would not pass go or collect $200 on their way to jail.

"Lousy ^&%^*()(*U program."

August 07, 2010  |  By OldGrumpy

 |  Version: Quicken Deluxe 2010 19.1.9.16

Pros

It works just fine as long as you do what the program wants YOU to do. Little like Hal in 2001. I keep listening for a little voice from the middle of my computer telling me, " I can't do that, Dave."

Cons

Try to have the program act as YOU (the owner) want it to, fugetaboudit. It has a mind of its own.

Summary

I've run this program and its predecessors for years -- probably close to 20 or longer. I've used both Mac and PC versions and have got along alright until just recently.
The program started to nag me about upgrading (free) and finally I did. Now, because of a federal law they claim was passed in 2005, it will NOT print my checks. My checks -- sold to me by Intuit since 2005 -- don't meet the federal rules, they claim, so that they may comply with the Federal rules, they've put some block on my computer -- with their free upgrade I'd guess -- which prevents the printer from printing my checks. At the very least they could have told me that if I upgraded that this would be the result; they did not say a word. I've sent a message to their tech people asking them how to fix this problem. Whadda ya want to be that it can be easily fixed by the purchase of some more of their printed checks at a dandy little price, I'll post an amendment to this review as soon as I have heard from Intui; they said I should hear from their techies in 2 days.
But am going to stay as far away from Intuit hereafter as I can possibly get; unless you too want to start writing out your checks in long hand, you might want to avoid them too.

June 15, 2010  |  By popbuddy

 |  Version: Quicken Deluxe 2010 19.1.9.16

Pros

Not much, just needs some work.

Cons

Never could get my new 2010 to install. Just a FLASH.

Summary

Stayed on customer support for 3 days with email and chat. They finally gave me a download of Home and Business. Sometimes it opens and again it just creates new desktop icon. Have used Quicken and QB Pro for more than 10 years but looking for something more stable.

"Quicken 2010 needs help"

June 08, 2010  |  By jsb2b

 |  Version: Quicken Deluxe 2010 19.1.9.16

Pros

Good financial software since there doesn't seem to be much else out there.

Cons

Increased start up time and flickering / flashing headers when updating financial data.

Summary

I have used Quicken Deluxe for many, many years. This is the worse version to date. Long load time due to much larger data file than previous versions. Online banking downloads are iffy at best. Discover Card "Web Connect' has been getting OL-293-A errors for 2 months. I get "Quicken is not currently the application configured for web connect" message window almost every time Quicken starts. The headers flash and flicker when data is being updated which is very distracting. It seems Intuit has rolled all their known and unsolved bugs into the 2010 version. Still, I use Quicken Deluxe due to a lack of an alternative program. I just hope Intuit hires some new programmers and beta testers to restore this product to it's original quality software.....

Updated on Jun 8, 2010

BTW. Quicken issued Article ID: 7864 on June 7, 2010 that the OL-293a problem with Discover Card is not their problem but that Discover Card's servers are down. Maybe so, but Discover Card's servers cannot be down for 2 months can they???

Updated on Oct 20, 2010

So after 4 months, Quicken now asks if you want Discover to be added to Web Connect or whatever. So you go through the panels typing your Discover Card Account Center userid and password, it does a connect to Discover, and eventually pops a window saying that it could not connect with the Discover servers and that it is not your fault. Try later. I tried creating a new "Credit" account and repeating the connect setup. Same results. So I continue to download the Quicken file from Discover manually and update Quicken that way. CapitalOne Visa works just fine with "One Step Update"....

"The conversion of data corrupted several accounts."

June 08, 2010  |  By dbartoli

 |  Version: Quicken Deluxe 2010 19.1.9.16

Pros

There are no pros to this version.

Cons

After upgrading to this version from 2009, several accounts had missing transactions, leaving "one-legged" entries that are nearly impossible to correct. The first update to 2010 broke the ability to communicate with my primary bank account.

Summary

I don't know what the author used to test the software before writing this, but she certainly couldn't have used it with any live data. Nearly every user review that I have read rakes this product over the coals. The product was released with many flaws that should never have made it out of beta. A TERRIBLE product that has cost Intuit a 15 year customer.
