Portable Movie Maker is a simple program that allows users to edit video clips together into one movie. Although we like the interface and a lot of the features, certain parts of the program didn't work quite as well as they should have.
The program's interface is sleek and intuitive, making the potentially complicated process of editing a movie quite simple. The Collections tabs allows users to view all of the clips that they'll be working with, while the Tasks tabs includes such items as capturing video and editing and finishing the movie. Putting the clips together is as simple as dragging each one to the desired spot on a timeline, and then adding transition effects if desired. The whole thing is very straightforward, and even users with no previous movie editing experience should be able to figure it out. Unfortunately, the program isn't quite as functional as it is well-designed. We were happy to see that the program allows users to capture video from a device, but when we tried this, despite the fact that we carefully followed the instructions, we found that only part of what we'd recorded ended up in the clip, and the video and audio were extremely out of sync. We were also disappointed to find that although the program has both a Help menu item and other places in the interface where tips are offered, trying to access these items results in error messages.
Portable Movie Maker is free. The program comes as a ZIP file and is accessible after extraction with no need for installation. We recommend this program with reservations; it has a lot of potential, but it's not quite where it needs to be.

"Triggered Virus software and then did NOT run"

Triggered Virus protection to quarantine the runonce.exe and then when I tried to run what was left it just locked up on me and could never get it to work.

The download contains the file "Runonce.exe" wich was recognized as a Trojan Horse by symentec.
Do not download this file unless you know what you are doing.
The file I was supposed to run got deleted by my antivirus software. The file moviemk does not run
The program far.exe does run although I don't have a clue what it does. This file did not trigger my antivirus softwareSummary

Summary
This is the FIRST time that I've downloaded an infected file from CNET, and I've been using and recommending it for years to library and IT patrons/clients. CNET is my go-to safe download for anything and everything. I ALWAYS bypass the manufacturers or designers download sites if I can find it here on CNET.

This is the portable version of the original Windows Movie Maker 2.1 that is on Windows XP. You know the one that supports direct record from your webcam but it works on Windows 7.

Only this the portable version of Windows Movie Maker 2.1 which is the Windows XP version works on Windows 7. But this is NOT the Microsoft version.

I did not have any problems with this.This is the Windows XP version of Movie Maker 2.1 for Windows XP. But it does work on Windows 7 but this is the portable version. And only this-the portable version works on Windows 7 but this is not the official Microsoft version. If you want the Microsoft version you have to get Movie Maker 2.6 the next version up for Windows Vista. This is the same as 2.6 but because this is 2.1 this supports direct record from your webcam. But as I already have Movie Maker 2.6 that does it all for me. I am not sure about this version 2.1 potable at the moment. Andrea Borman.
Unfortunently I have read other peoples reviews here on this site and on another site. And they do say that their anti virus scans showed some infected or files that MAY be malware. Although I do not have any anti virus software on my computer except for the standard Windows Defender that comes with Windows 7 and also Malicious Software removal Tool-MRT. My Windows Defender and MRT scans did not show any malware or a computer virus. But as other people have reported it in their scans-that were not done with Windows Defender or MRT. But with high security programs-McAfee securit,AVG and others.-it could be a false positive as AVG and McAfee is known to block programs that have not needed to be blocked. But even so until we know more about if or not it is safe to use this program. I advise Windows 7 and Windows Vista User to stick with Microsofts Windows Movie Maker 2.6 only for the time being. As we know that Microsofts Windows Movie Maker 2.6 IS SAFE.

As always, I ran virus scan using McAfee. McAfee had to quarantine an item out of the zipped folder. After running a second time, nothing was quarantined, however, I do not run any programs that I'm not familiar with that shows up as a potential threat.
