Editors' Review

Although many of us park our computers on a desk in our office or home, there are plenty of other environments in which they turn up. In some of these settings, such as nightclubs, theaters, planetariums, and darkened lecture halls, a bright monitor can be a distraction. PangoBright is a simple utility that makes it easy to adjust the brightness of your monitor or monitors. DJs, theater techs, presentation givers, and anyone else who operates in a dark environment and doesn't want the screen stealing the show will love PangoBright.

PangoBright requires no installation and appears as an icon in your system tray once it's opened. Clicking on it reveals a menu with brightness options ranging from 20 percent to 100 percent of maximum brightness. If you're using multiple monitors, the menu allows you to set the brightness of each one individually. That's all there is to it. The publisher's Web site contains information about the program and brief instructions, but they're really not necessary, as PangoBright is extremely intuitive. The program is also lightweight and not a drain on system resources; you won't even know it's there until you need it. Sometimes the smallest utilities can make a big difference, and that's definitely the case with PangoBright. Those who have ever worked in a dark environment and have wished that their monitor could easily tone it down will appreciate this clever tool.

"Amazing!!!!!!"

August 30, 2014  |  By swagpasta

 |  Version: PangoBright 1.0

Pros

Works great!
Does what it's supposed to.
No installation process.

Cons

There are no cons!

Summary

I signed up just to leave a review for the makers who deserve it. Listen, this was important to me.

I am a work at home mom and there is one big problem I have had. I have a big, lovely huge Dell monitor that I love. However, something happened during a move and the buttons stopped working. I couldn't dim my monitor anymore.

Now, I have kids, including my nine month old. Being able to work and have her asleep has been an issue because my monitor was so insanely bright. Now, the only thing annoying my family is the sound of my typing which by now, I expect to be a lullaby.

Your little app might be simple to you but to me, it's a big deal! I really need this. Thank you so much!!!

"Works but with major flaws"

June 05, 2014  |  By augiem

 |  Version: PangoBright 1.0

Pros

It can make the screen VERY dim, which I absolutely need. It doesn't actually lower the backlight in your monitor by writing to the monitor's limited writable memory like some of the other programs out there.

Cons

Its major flaw is that many types of dialog boxes are either unlit or flash at full brightness for a split second before being dimmed. Most right click dialogs do it, and even the auto-complete drop-down in Explorer or any web browser. It doesn't sound that bad until you see it. You literally get a blinding flash of white with every key press in an auto-complete drop down.

Summary

First, the previous reviewer complained of Download's terrible installer bundled with junkware. Simply download by clicking the "Direct Download Link" below the big green "Download Now" button in the upper left corner of this page to get just the .exe file. Place this somewhere (c:\program files (x86)\Pango Bright), make a shortcut to it, put it in your startup, etc.

I was trying to find a replacement for the now defunct Desktop Lighter, which is in all ways an EXCELLENT utility and actually not buggy at all like Pango Bright (you can still find it for download). The problem was, it didn't let me lower my brightness far enough for my liking. So now I'm using both Desktop Lighter and Pango Bright together. Desktop lighter lowers the brightness on even those pesky dialog boxes, so while Pango still makes them flicker, at least they don't flicker super bright anymore because Desktop Ligher is keeping their levels lower than the monitor's default.

"Great, except...."

April 21, 2014  |  By CHAOTICYAN

 |  Version: PangoBright 1.0

Pros

The PangoBright program, itself, is quite excellent.

Cons

Cannot use it without a little workaround, due to infuriating distribution process.

Summary

Here's the deal: this program works flawlessly. It is the only program I have found that can dim monitors independently, which is a must-have for gaming with dual monitors. It is easy to swap how dim you want the screen to be in 10% increments, from the system tray, and then apply the brightness reduction to whichever screen you like with one click. The only criticism I have for the program itself is that there is occasionally a bit of flicker on dialogs when opened by right-clicking within windows

The problem is the way this download is packaged at present on C-Net's site. The link will download a C-Net executable with a long name. When you execute it, a seven-step "install" dialog pops up. Just about every step of it is an opportunity to change your web browser's home page or install search bars, or other crap you aren't signing up for. This is standard fare. I don't have a problem with it if it's a dialog you need to go through one time.

The problem is that PangoBright never really installs on your system. It doesn't list itself in the Windows registry. It doesn't create a desktop icon. It doesn't list itself in the program files in your Start menu.

The C-Net executable will put it in a temporary file in your "users" directory and provide no links to the PangoBright.exe otherwise. Which means, when you wake up tomorrow and boot up, you won't be able to find PangoBright anywhere on your desktop, or in your system tray.

In other words, as an amateur PC user, you will be inclined to run the C-Net executable to use PangoBright again... and turn down another six steps of pure web marketing horses**t (or maybe instead you'll install another round of this stuff, being as the steps are subtly designed to infer this is just part of the install process, if you don't read closely). Behind the scenes, the "installer" will then make another temporary folder to drop PangoBright.exe into... an entirely different folder... right next to the folder it already "installed" PangoBright yesterday. That's right: you now have two temporary folders containing copies of exactly the same program, and exactly the same associated gfx and icons.

I wonder how many temporary folders you could get going at one time, all containing exactly the same PangoBright.exe and gfx files, in your user temp files?

Rhetorical question: as many as you'd like. But no matter: remove the .exe and icons from the temporary folder, store them where you like them, make a shortcut to your desktop, and your problem is solved. Nevertheless, that PangoBright is packaged this way, bundled in an attempt to block newbie users from accessing it again when they have already "installed" it, just to get them to run back through the commercial dialogs...

...in summary, I despise the fact that such a useful program can only be "installed" through this vendor, if that is the tactical approach to "installing" that the vendor uses at this point.

November 26, 2012  |  By jaynswartz

 |  Version: PangoBright 1.0

Pros

Small, easy to install, no learning curve, applies to multiple monitors.

Cons

None that I have found.

Summary

Doesn't try to be more than it is...simply a brightness control that gives desktops the same control as laptop users over their screen(s).
