Once you explore the power of NoteTab Light, you may find this text editor beautiful despite its hectic interface. At its core, NoteTab Light is to Windows' Notepad as an iPhone is to a rotary phone. NoteTab Light incorporates top-level tabs similar to most Web browsers, so that you can manage several different projects at once, and it can automatically replace Notepad so that Notepad's icons open NoteTab instead.
However, there's much more to it. The left column displays a list of commands, called Clips, that do anything from inserting bits of text to generating code. Each library, the roster of which appears as tabs at the bottom of the screen, contains its own set of clips. The FTP library, for example, lets you create server profiles, connect, upload and download files, and issue various commands. The HTML library auto-completes HTML tags. The publisher's site offers many user-created libraries, or you can make your own. You can create your own clips by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F2.
Several of the clips, including the Tidy HTML clip and the TopStyle library, require secondary freeware apps to support them, but NoteTab will direct you to their Web pages if it finds them missing. NoteTab Light isn't a tool for casual users, but power users and programmers should find plenty to love.

Version: NoteTab Light 5.5
"Powerful editor; my first paid-for trialware"
Pros: Wow, if you're disorganized with me and use one place to store your random notes etc than you're gonna love NoteTab. I've been using the 'outline' feature to organize miscellaneous information. Directly supports & launches hyperlinks, etc. Developer monitors a couple of yahoo groups; there's a lot of power in this application

Version: NoteTab Light 5.5
Pros: Lots of useful features but starts up very fast and doesn't hog memory.
Genuinely free. Simple to install and uninstall, no hassle, no nags, no spyware.
Cons: (If you only use English and other European languages, this problem WILL NOT affect you at all). This Light/Free version cannot save some non-roman alphabet languages such as Chinese and Japanese. You can edit them, but when you save and re-open the file, all you'll see is a load of ??? in place of the characters.
I experienced this when using English Win XP, BTW - perhaps NoteTab would handle it ok in Chinese or Japanese editions of Windows.
Looking at the NoteTab website, it looks like one of the non-free versions (NoteTab Standard) doesn't have this problem, but apparently the more expensive NoteTab Pro does(?)

Version: NoteTab Light 5.5
Pros: I have used Note Tab Pro for years and would not do without it. I know of nothing that could be added that would make it better than it already is. The Spell Checker is not supported by NoteTab Light, but is supported by Note Tab Pro.
I am using Note Tab Light at the moment, but intend to upgrade to Note Tab Pro as soon as I get the new computer completly configured and all the other programs installed.
Cons: I have nothing negative to report concerning this text editor.

Version: NoteTab Light 5.5
"Full of useful utilities, functions, & customization"
Pros: FYI--whoever stated in their review that the license requires purchase of the commercial version didn't download the free version. I've been using this program for some time, and never had nag screens, time limitations, etc. It can do about everything (and more) that you'd want a text editor to do. Freeware this good is virtually never free--way to go Fookes Software.
Cons: It won't make me dinner.

Version: NoteTab Light 5.5
"Excellent program, doesn't spell check or brew coffee."
Pros: I've used Note Tab Lite for several years, and it does the job I need it to do.
What more could you ask of a small, very complex program? It's also very easy to remove the > symbols off forwarded email. I always remove those before I forwart stuff, anyway.
Cons: No spell check. I know what I _think_ I'm writing, but it's hard to proof on my own stuff. My work-around is to do my text in MS Word or Works, spell check it, the cut and paste it to NTL.
