With the a la carte online music store space becoming more crowded by the day, one-time bad boy Napster re-emerges as a label-endorsed gem. With a massive collection of tracks and some neat community features, this isn't the Napster you remember. The interface is clean, with large, easy-to-read buttons and tabs for searching different areas of the service. Browsing is extremely quick, with results showing up just moments after you initiate them. We liked the Charts feature, which lets you search Billboard charts all the way back to 1956, in addition to Napster's own charts. The jukebox works well, but seems limited in comparison to programs such as iTunes or MusicMatch, which have more mature features. Although Napster has several positives in its corner, there are more than a few quirks. For starters, Napster forces you to create a user ID and login just to browse music. There also is no support for the industry-leading iPod. Finally, we experienced random odd behavior from the application. Although Napster as a music service gets high marks for its extensive catalog and exclusive content, as an application it seems to still be finding its stride.

Version: Napster 3.1.1.4
Pros: You get to listen to songs before purchase, if you have a subscription. WMA format may turn off some, I could care less, lots and lots of songs!!
Cons: If you get a virus..say three times, and have to reformat your system..Your music is gone, you cant even listen to your songs. With it's bloated resource hungry interface it seems like more of an online music magazine than a record store. ITunes is still the champ!

Version: Napster 3.1.1.4
Pros: There's a few pros on why Napster is STILL good. First, one of the major pros is that it accepts paypal. You don't need a credit card, you can use your bank. Unlike, iTunes, where up in Canada, you can't pay with paypal here.
Second Pro: They have a subscription service. 2 to be exact. 1 where you can listen to most of their songs without paying $1.19 Canadian (99 cents if you're U.S), for $9.95 a month. The 2nd one is the same thing, only you can fill a compatible MP3 player for as long as you like, or til you cancel service.
Third, and most important i think, is the ability to share music with other people. Which makes it a Community. If they added chat in there, other than just the inbox, they'd be set. And, the inbox is cool. Get new music delievered, people can send you their playlists and tracks, and vice versa.
Last is the sound quality. It's not even comparable to iTunes. Napster's sound blows iTunes AAC format off the map. That's cause Napster uses windows media technolgy, which offers even better sound than normal.
Cons: Now, for the cons of the service. Despite all it's good things, the service is of course flawed.
First, it is a little bulky as compared to iTunes. It's a memory hog, and it does tend to slow things down a little bit. Download speeds are still fast. But, pretty sure if you own a half decent computer, this should be no problem.
Con number 2: Certain CD's don't have ALL the songs to it. So, if you're looking to burn a specific CD, you might just have a problem with that. They says it's because of the record labels being stupid, and that's probably right.
Finally, they don't have as many exclusives as iTunes does. Normally iTunes gets the CD a couple days before it comes out. Whereas Napster has the single first, and the Album comes out same time: Tuesdays. They try with their NapsterLive, but, it's a little weak.
It's a good store. Yes, it does have some improvements to make. But, if you are looking for an alternative to iTunes, i would suggest giving Napster a try. It does come with a week free when you sign up for a subscription, so, check it out!

Version: Napster 3.1.1.4
Pros: Napster is the best online music store on the market. The software is so easy to use and includes message boards, something iTunes doesn't have. (Don't understand why the latest release was only given 3 Stars by cnet - becuase it doesn't support the crappy iPod!)
Cons: Not many. Lack of independant labels, chat room.
