If you have trouble keeping track of all your movies--whether on DVD or on your hard drive--this easy-to-master app will help save the day.

MovieManager launches a nicely sized window divided into three panes. The design is slightly different from the typically familiar e-mail client, and although not a lot of design panache is apparent, the look is functional and clear to understand. A short menu bar and only a few buttons on the toolbar make the app seem simplistic, but the bells and whistles are there and are essential, not over the top. One pane allows the user to enter data about a given movie or actor, the second lists each record, and the third lists characters and cast for a selected film.

This free app performed well in our tests. We liked that we could simply enter a title and click the Go To IMDb button, and a browser window would open and automatically perform a search for the title. We also liked that we could configure the app to use a default movie player so that clicking the appropriate button would launch the player and begin the video. Using the sample preformatted database for a tutorial is a handy feature for true novices, but the app actually is easy to comprehend.

Hard-core cinephiles may prefer a more robust database tool for managing their video collections, but this is a nice off-the-shelf package for getting started.
