This latest upgrade of Morpheus cleans up the interface a bit, removing most redundant buttons and including a set of browser-like navigation buttons while keeping its decent Gnutella-network client capabilities. Four large buttons occupy the main toolbar, though only three are functional. The Media Manager button leads to a splash page for an upcoming feature. Users are going to be most interested in the smaller second row of buttons that control the actual file-sharing functionality. The Connections button shows your connection status and gives you a search button for initiating new searches. We like the fact that each new search opens in its own window within the overall invoice, so you can keep your different searches organized. Subscreens, such as the ones under the Shared Files and Transfers buttons, include more control buttons at the bottom of the screen that can be obscured by the banner ad if the window is too small.
When downloading files, you can view size, type, download speed, and the number of hosts, and you can right-click for other metadata, but Morpheus never displays song bit rates, leaving you in the dark as to a file's sound quality. We had good luck downloading files with more than two hosts, but anything less than that remained beyond reach. Overall, from a list of 15 files with numbers of hosts ranging from one to five, we were able to begin downloading eight within half an hour. While waiting for your downloads you can try the included chat client, a branded version of PalTalk that gives you access to hundreds of groups and offers audio and video streams. Morpheus also bundles a shopping utility from Wurld Media that lets users earn rewards for shopping with a selected set of online merchants. To participate in that program you will need to register and, of course, become the target of various direct marketing campaigns. Overall, Morpheus is still rough around the edges. The positioning of buttons in the interface isn't well thought out and it lacks refinements such as the ability to search for file types, for example video files.
