While Mint.com for iPhone won't bring you the entire range of financial information available on Mint's Web site, the updated app does come closer than its predecessor. If you sign up for Mint to send you alerts for significant financial events, such as going over your allotted budget, Mint will now push notifications to your phone. The app also opens up to viewing its recently added budgeting tools. New editing fields are the single best addition, and they turn Mint.com's iPhone app from a read-only summary of your finances into a tool that begins to let you update and change your settings and preferences from the phone. Right now this means assigning a spending category from the iPhone, tagging a transaction, and adding notes. An additional four-digit security passcode tops off the new features.
Without refined tools to manage investments or real-time cash purchases (some OCR software would fit in nicely here), does the update offer enough? With the exception of a slightly slower start-up, it doesn't backtrack. And since we haven't seen third-party software that one-ups this app, there's little choice for Minties. Dissatisfied users will need to scoot over to Mint.com from the Safari browser to access the site's spectrum of financial tools. Or, pressure the developer for more.
