MenuEverywhere for Mac

CNET Editors' review

by: Paul Hughes on April 04, 2011

MenuEverywhere helps power users--and anyone else with multiple monitors, or just a very large monitor--get quick access to an application's menu bar, from any window or any screen.

MenuEverywhere works in the background, with a slim CPU footprint and an extensive set of preferences to control its appearance and behavior. You can set MenuEverywhere to put a complete menu bar on the top of every window associated with an app (for example, the Photoshop menu bar on every Photoshop window, no matter which monitor the window appears in), or you can have it just place a single "Menu" button on the top of each window, with the other menu bar headers nested underneath in drop-down menus. You can have the button (or buttons) visible all the time, or invisible until you mouse over them, and you can also have additional menus only appear on secondary monitors. Probably the coolest feature in MenuEverywhere (especially for keyboard-addicted power users) is the ability to invoke an app's menu bar with a hot key or a programmed mouse button, at the current mouse location--which you can then browse through and use with your arrow keys. An optional ignore list lets you exclude certain apps from MenuEverywhere.

Most users won't find a need for MenuEverywhere, but for those who do, this app can be a tremendous time-saver (and a welcome relief for overworked mousing muscles). Recent updates have made the app's performance even faster and smoother.

Publisher's Description

From Binary Bakery:

If you've got a large monitor or a dual or multi-monitor setup, then MenuEverywhere will eliminate the frustration of having to reach out for the menubar and losing focus on your work. MenuEverywhere makes the menubar's menu accessible from any window on any screen. It's unobtrusive, and highly configurable. The first way is via a configurable 'Menu' button. The button can be optionally made to appear only when the mouse is over it so as not to take any screen real estate. Its position can be set above the traffic light controls or to the right of the green zoom button. MenuEverywhere also works via hotkey, popping up the menu at the current mouse location. This may be disabled if so desired.

What's new in this version:

  • Windows being pushed down to bottom of screen with certain non-adjacent monitor arrangements.
  • Workarounds for more apps that do not strictly adhere to Accessibility API guidelines.
  • Lion (10.7): Screen top menubar is now hidden on secondary/non-primary monitors when app is fullscreened.

      "A must have add-on"

      October 10, 2011  |   By hoggdoc

      Version: MenuEverywhere 1.9.49

      Pros

Easy to configure and use, price is right, fixes something that OSX should have years ago.

      Cons

Sometimes there is a lag in the MENU button when you move a window. Its no big deal but something the developer should address

      Summary

Once you instal and use this a few times you'll wonder what you did with out it.
