"Must skip this software"

January 31, 2014  |  By CraigM25

 |  Version: McAfee Internet Security 2014

Pros

Simple interface

Cons

Bloated software that isn't efficient or effective

Summary

When possible, skip McAfee and Symantec software. Both companies manufacture poor software that is difficult to remove and does a poor job of detecting viruses and malware.

Consider Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast, or TrendMicro

"Sluggish and Broken"

January 30, 2014  |  By RCOS_Development

 |  Version: McAfee Internet Security 2014

Pros

I can't fill in this section, because the software didn't run at all. However, I'll give a thumbs up for allowing for Shaw Communications Internet Customers a free subscription for McAfee Internet Security.

Cons

The software installed in 1.5 hours (fresh install of Windows XP with 4 GB of RAM). After it installed, it immediately crashed upon opening it for the first time. I restarted the computer, and the software crashed again.

Summary

I wouldn't recommend using Intel Security/McAfee Internet Security, as it has evolved into a bloated and slow piece of software. Especially if you are trying to use a low end computer, don't even think of putting this on it.

"loads of problems"

September 14, 2013  |  By edite111

 |  Version: McAfee Internet Security 2013

Pros

trial version was ok

Cons

read the summary

Summary

I want to share my very recent exprience with McAfee Antivirus Plus 2013. At first I had trial version and after it ended I decided to upgrade to McAfee Antivurus Plus 2013. I experienced some problems with downloading it - it didn`t install properly and I had to contact customer services. They said they can fix problems with remote access to my computer. I don`t know how did they managed it, because I could see all setup on my comp, but after restarting my computer it appeared that some of the features, data, files and software were deleted entirely from my computer. I did recovery to the earlier time in day, but it didn`t help. I managed to reinstall some of the features , but I still had some major errors in the computer, because everytime I switched it on I received error messages and most of the installed programms didn`t work properly. In the end the only solution was to perform the full destructive recovery to restore it to manufacturer settings. Needless to say all this process took TIME and lost some of my data.

May 12, 2013  |  By Hinterion

 |  Version: McAfee Internet Security 2013

Pros

McAfee internet security is even worse than Kaspersky internet security 2012. It blocked access to my 2nd hard disk drive.
The only way to access my files (music, video, etc) I had to uninstall McAfee.

Cons

Summary

I will never buy it again.

"experienced poor admin/support/screensharing"

February 22, 2013  |  By scarsegit

 |  Version: McAfee Internet Security 2013

Pros

none that I presently want to comment on, maybe later herein.

Cons

none that I presently want to comment on, maybe later herein.

Summary

Good day,
I had 3 licence "Internet Security" (IS) for two years, first via retail, second via the net.The latter becoming and presently still is my worst ever experience, virtually ending after 3.5 hours of screen sharing and being told my pc had a virus.
Around late 2012, McAfee updated/graded my protection to "Total Protection" (TP), at a cost 3 times that of my (IS) which I could ill afford and, with no request or authorisation from/by myself. Admittedly they did correct the debit and then charged me for 3 licence (IS), and installed same, but only onto my Desktop, and with (TP) still on my Laptop.
During the last 3.5hr screen sharing,(TP)was removed totally from my Laptop, and I was told that there was/is a virus, then only to later find that there was also no (IS). So, for nigh on two months my laptop has been unprotected and presently still is. Frankly I am not the most experienced in the use of PCs and I am heartily fedup trying to get the message across to McAfee, remotely so, I am sure that they could/should install (IS) for me, after all I have paid for the 3 licences for 2013 and I only want to finish up using two of them.
So, in reviewing my experience, upto the time of December 2012 automatic updating/grading I had absolutely no problems with McAfee and the (IS) I had for 2011 and 2012. 2013 however has got off to a bad start. The screen sharing was the most uncomfortable and frustratingly labourious, various and different nationalities and their poor grasp of english, nor my understanding same, did not help. All to the negative I would put down to poor admin/support from McAfee.
Cheers and best wishes to all,
Scarsegit.
Angst is waning,.....To the wife, darling them shoes are to expensive, you cannot buy them, in bed that night he became quite randy, she turned over and said, darling, if you cannot shoe this horse you cannot ride it. LOL I hope.

"Only keeping it because it came with the OEM"

October 29, 2012  |  By ericollo

 |  Version: McAfee Internet Security 2012

Pros

Paid AV is apparently always better
Does seem to work

Cons

Can't add virus exceptions to files stored in "critical" locations
It doesn't shut up when I decide to disable it(s functions)
Crappy interface hard to navigate
Cannot add multiple files to its firewall
Does not have a option to disable those scan your computer reminders
Updates too frequently
Restoring quarantined files is a pain in the ass

Summary

What can I say? I chose an Acer computer to be the first laptop I ever buy, and a small part of the reason I chose it was because of the OEM Security Suite that came with it. At first I was happy I needn't spend money on another AV program for a whole year, but then it started to annoy me.
This program has options, but the truth is, unless you decide to uninstall it, stop its process from the task manager or temporarily disable it by renaming its main program, it WILL NOT SHUT UP until it GETS WHAT IT WANTS, sort of like scare-ware. That's why I'm giving it a 3.5; I'm getting airport security, or a presidential bodyguard, for free.
But, like airport security, it is overwhelmingly stupidly paranoid. For one, it is extremely difficult for one to find the "advanced options", because the button exists as a tiny link at the top right corner of the software's window, contrast to the big-ass buttons and fonts for "scan now" or "update now, your virus is five days out of date".
Virus exceptions can be added apparently, however I can't seem to get it to work because unlike McAfee's genius dvelopers, I like to install my "virus-infected" programs under "program files", which ISS thinks is a critical folder. No-it-isnt, System32 is a critical folder, however "program files" is about as critical as c:\games, which mcafee doesn't think is critical, which shows a flaw in logic.
Another thing that highlights McAfee's stupidity is that unless you set a quarantined file as an exception, McAfee will fkkk it up even if you just restored it. Out of the big house, and in again the very next second. Boo! If I want to set OJ free after being warned repeatedly, I'll set OJ free. It's my computer, I do what I want!
Ignoring the pop-ups, the AV's effect on system performance does seem relatively light. Although its pop-ups can sometimes disrupt a winning streak in a multiplayer gaming session, in which you will definitely loose just because your computer might come under an attack just because McAfee hasn't updated in 5 days, it generally doesn't do much damage to the speed at which your computer runs.
Speaking of the frequent updates... 5 DAYS, huhkay? If you remind me once a month, I'll tolerate you. But wanting to update once every five days is just unnecessary.
Besides, how much chance do you think I've got against any hacker? If professional hacker wants to look inside my computer, he's going to look inside my computer regardless of these fancy updates that don't seem to do much.
I wish i had bought the AV instead of getting it bundled... at least in that instance, I can get my money back.
