LuckyWire is a peer-to-peer file-sharing program that allows users to share files across the Gnutella network. The program is almost exactly like LimeWire, but it promises faster download speeds. We ran an informal experiment that suggests this may be true, but there are always so many variables when it comes to peer-to-peer download speeds that we can't say with 100 percent certainty.
First, a word about LuckyWire's interface. If you've seen LimeWire, you've seen LuckyWire; they're virtually indistinguishable. Both have a fairly sleek and intuitive interface, with both basic and advanced search options. In order to test download speeds, we chose a song--Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box," if you're curious--and downloaded the same copy of it from Gnutella using both LimeWire and LuckyWire. LimeWire came in at 2:08 minutes, while LuckyWire finished in 1:44. This is a negligible difference when downloading relatively small files such as songs, but this could translate to a significant chunk of time on a larger video file. Although we can't say for sure that LuckyWire offers consistently faster downloads than LimeWire, it is a possibility, and it's probably worth giving it a try. LuckyWire appears to have an online Help file, but it's actually just a six-question FAQ that doesn't offer any specifics on its operation, so don't expect guidance if you're not already familiar with file-sharing programs. Although the basics are easy to figure out, it would have been nice if, like LimeWire, LuckyWire offered some comprehensive instructions for use.
LuckyWire is free. It installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.
