A bevy of desktop bells and whistles awaits in Konfabulator, as long as your desires are modest and your system can spare the memory. The widgets on offer are slick but simple: battery indicators, clocks, stock tickers, and newsreaders, to name just a few. The ambitious and savvy can craft custom widgets with XML and JavaScript (and the ambitious and aspiring can download an extensive manual on the developer site). Note that these gewgaws will take up to 2MB of system memory when running. For finding those small, specific enhancements you simply must have, Konfabulator is your tool.Publisher's description

Version: Konfabulator 2.0
Pros: Konfabulator is amazing...the latest 2.0 release adds several new advanced features, including enhanced transparency abilities, and it requires even less system resources. In addition, their gallery contains tons of third-party widgets....everything from the weather and stock quotes to RSS feeds and cute animations.
Oh, and by the way....IT'S NOW FREE! Yahoo! announced today that they have purchased the three-man company and will be giving the software out for free...with no catches. (If you bought version 2.0+, they're even giving you a refund!) In addition, they plan to integrate it with Yahoo! services to make it even more advanced. Go to konfabulator.com and see the announcement for yourself. Enjoy!

Pros: Although I would never own an Apple Mac, I do love the intuitive OS and all it's features.
Widgets are a major factor in MacOS useability, and I was keen to add similar functionality to my XP Tablet PC Edtion desktop...searching on Google and other search engines turned up many results...some which asked for a £250+ payment(!).
Searching Download.com under Widgets turned up Konfabulator which is free. Konfabulator is a program which enables use of widgets downloadable from the products webpage, of which there are 100's available.
Personally, I only use two at the moment, the excellent Digital Clock widget which comes with the Konfabulator software download, and another which displays the capacities of my six HDD's, iPod, and other removable drives including Digital Camera, PDA and MemCard Reader.
I don't think I will ever remove this excellent prog unless a newer vers becomes available.
As for use of systems resources, I have barely noticed a dent in performance. During idle periods with Konfabulator and two widgets displayed, my performance peaks at 5% (while running iTunes also)and mem usage of just 238MB
Cons: No cons to this software at all, in my opinion!

"Brilliant, but a little resource-intensive"
Pros: Looks absolutely fantastic and works very well.
The collection of widgets is great and I love how each widget is seperate from the others so you open and close each one individually as you like.
Love the design, the graphics are very pretty and it seems to fit in well with any system theme.
Cons: Unfortunately it's quite resource-intensive, especially on older computers like mine. However if you keep the amount of widgets you have open to a minimum, you can easily get around that.
They also don't give you a very long trial period, 2 weeks apparently, which is a shame.
They could include better documentation also, there is a good tutorial at the start, but once you've finished that it appears that you're on your own.

Pros: In a time where everyone knows Desktop X this little app strives for supremecy, and wins on all accounts! no usibility reduction in windows, the f8 key is TOP STUFF! and the widgets that you can download are amazing, download this! - dissapointed, you will not be!
Cons: nothing i can see.
