In the ever-expanding and competitive realm of MMORPGs, Knights Online has a sturdy reputation for offering the most for free. A heavily-populated game, with nearly 300,000 people online when we played, Knights provides a familiar fight-and-quest medieval milieu that encourages interaction with other players but doesn't demand it.

For a free download, the graphics are top-rate. As you acquire weapons and armor, your character's physical appearance changes to reflect both the new implement of death being swung and the new pants you're wearing. The POV changes are fairly smooth and occasionally disorienting for it. There also is a paid upgrade version that opens up a community that allows you to sell items at a higher rate and more power.

The user subscription has another benefit: consistent access. The game is so popular that free players are blocked during peak hours. There are the usual drawbacks of cheaters and complaints about customer support, but the biggest problem we encountered was the installation. On top of the massive install file, we were required to add 13 patches with absolutely no documentation; it was only from the Web site's player forums that we learned about them.

All that being said, it's a fun game that can magically obliterate your free time--and leave you happier for it.

Publisher's description

From K2 Network :

We invite you to the world of Knight Online, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that utilizes a party system where you help your fellow players to advance. A prominent and exciting feature of Knight Online is the involving, persistent, large-scale war between players. Upon registering and creating your character, you must choose between two nations: El Morad, the nation of the human race, and Karus, the nation of the Orc tribes. The successful player will seek to join forces with others of his or her nation in order to obtain victory. By enduring battles, that character may also become a hero in the Knight Online World. He may also receive a title and reward from the King, become the lord of his own castle, and even rule over a city. Version 1.282 may include unspecified updates, enhancements, or bug fixes.

Note: This is a very large (283MB) file and may take several hours to download via dial-up modem.

"World of Warcraft too expensive for you? Try Free KoL!"

    by kbryant118 on August 19, 2005

Pros: This game is overall pretty nice. It's got exceptional graphics, and millions of online users. Its not too laggy due to the numerous servers available. It is similiar to WoW, but it doesn't carry the similar $15 a month price tag. In fact, it doesn't carry a price tag at all. This is one of the best RPGs ive ever played, and the fact that its free is wonderful. To top it off, the game has an exceptional website (KnightOnlineWorld.com) with a great big beginner helper showing you about the enemies and controls and what not.

Cons: Although the website does have a good beginners section, it just states the obvious. I relied on some high leveled characters to really show me the ins and outs of the game. But once you learn, its not too bad. You really can't figure out all the best parts of the game if you didn't know where to look because sometimes the descriptions on portals and other things aren't very descriptive. Its hard to explain but you'd see what I was saying if you played it. That, however, doesn't affect actual gameplay what-so-ever.

"Knight Online is so fun and addictive, I don't plan on buying games anymore"

by JYANG on September 7, 2005

Pros: Knight Online is a FREE MMORPG (massively multiplayer role playing game). Why is that so unbelievable? An MMORPG normally requires a monthly fee to PLAY the game. And no, you don't even get the game for free - you have to pay sometimes 50-60 bucks for that too! Knight Online is not only free, it's addictive, fun, has beautiful graphics (which have been just upgraded in a recent FREE expansion), and the online community is only becoming more friendly. TIP - You cannot move your character from server to server. If you want to take advantage of the massively multiplayer, join Ares, which is one of the most populated servers (if not the most).

Cons: There is nothing wrong with Knight Online the game, but if you don't like playing in a community with players from all over the world (the servers aren't reserved for certain locations), then you might not like this otherwise outstanding game.

    "A decent MMORPG for free"

by MorbidFinch on August 17, 2005

Pros: The game itself is fairly well designed. The interface is fine, and the short-cut actions make the gameplay enjoyable. The graphics are good for a free game like this, but it won't be knocking your socks off, which for those without a gaming class PC is a good thing.

The simplicity of the classes make the game instantly able to be jumped into and enjoyed without a degree in AD&D, and a minor in hit and damroll.

Generally a good role-playing game that you can play with your buddies over the net. Can be addictive though, so make sure if you want to spend some real time with them, that they are not easily addicted.

Cons: The servers are very laggy and unreliable. I've tried a few of the servers to find a more reliable one, but they all basically suffer from the same problems. Often you aren't able to connect to the server your character is on, then you have to completely start the software again to try again, which can be time consuming. A hint, have a character on more than one server.

It is necessary to use the forum on the game's website in order to find out some of the details as to how to play the game and use some of its functions. The players on the game are either very tight-lipped when it comes to helping newbies, or they don't speak your language (english is a minority language on this game).

Playing the game and leveling your character takes a really looong time, unless you pay for a premium membership which costs $$$.

The games lacks variety. You will find yourself fighting the same monsters over and over and over, and struggling to kill them before the other dozen players around you kill them first.

"One of the best free MMORPGs out there"

by ZidaneTribal on September 16, 2005

Pros: Knight Online is probably the best free MMORPG that I have yet played. Of course, there are some better MMORPGs, but they are all Pay-to-Play. When wondering what MMORPG to get myself, I first considered Final Fantasy XI, but after looking at the price tags...(well, you can imagine - apart from costing around $35 all by itself, you must also pay $12.95 a month - all that considering that I don't have time to play it every day and that I don't even have a credit card for the monthly fee payment...). So, anyway, I decided that I needed something cheaper. I tried a lot of free online MMORPGs (the best of them was Runescape), but I quit them mainly because the graphics were way too bad or because they were simply boring. Then I found Knight Online. The graphics weren't as good as in Final Fantasy XI, but they also weren't really that bad. I found some good beginner instructions on the official site and I was started in no time. What first caught my eye were the variety of creatures, weapons, and spells. The creature tree is quite interesting - apart from having separate kinds, many also have a -er- evolutionary tree. That means that in the game there are the "starter"-type creatures, who are normally for beginner players; the "medium"-type creatures, who are for more advanced players; and the "advanced"-type creatures, who are for pros.

The magic animations in Knight Online are impressively realistic. There are only 3 types of magic in Knight Online: Lightning, Glacier, and Fire (well, 4, if you count Basic magic, which isn't really too much use). Although there are only 3 types of magic, each type has a lot of different spells in its category (for all levels). For example, Fire-type magic includes everything from weak flames to a firestorm.

The weapons category is too extensive to describe here. The only thing I can say is that there are a LOT of weapons.

Well, that's all I can say about the game itself.

Cons: There are two minuses in Knight Online: 1.It takes rather long to download.

2.Most of the quests are rather boring.

That's all with the review folks, thanks for reading!
