Editors' review

Sooner or later, nearly everyone whose work involves computers will need basic office tools such as a word processor, spreadsheet program, or presentation maker. Since Microsoft's powerful Office suite sets the standard, alternatives need to demonstrate their compatibility with the latest versions of Office. Kingsoft Office 2012 Free is the freeware version of Kingsoft Office Professional. It's a fraction of the size of some similar programs, and of course, it's free.

It bundles Kingsoft Writer, Spreadsheets, and Presentations. Each can open, edit, and save documents that are compatible with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, respectively. While it can't match everything Office (or its tools) can do, Kingsoft Office 2012 Free does the most important jobs, and it also has many extras, including encryption, a PDF converter, and watermarking. It even has some unique features of its own, such as its Humanized Table Operation and drag-and-drop Paragraph Adjustment feature. The latest version is compatible with Windows 8.

From its start menu to its individual tools, Kingsoft is enough like Office in features and options to be familiar to many users, though with its own unique touches. For example, Writer's Homepage is quite similar to Word's File page, but compared with Word's ribbon-style Office look, Writer's tabbed user interface bears more resemblance to a browser. Each Kingsoft tool sports feature-packed toolbars, too. But we'll get right to the point: we successfully created, saved, edited, opened, and re-edited documents from both Microsoft Office 2010 and Kingsoft Office 2012 in each of the comparable tools. Compatibility isn't total; for example, Kingsoft Office could open and edit macro-enabled Word docs, but not save them again in that format (it could in other formats).

Kingsoft Office has a full Help file plus an online Support Center and Forum. But if you just start with one of the templates on each tool's Home page, you won't go wrong.

This free productivity suite obviously merits attention. When all is said and done, it's easy to find out if Kingsoft Office 2012 Free is the software you need it to be: Just download it and try it yourself.

    "immediately installs browser redirects"

    July 27, 2014   |   By umlando-2009

    Version: WPS Office 2014 Beta 1 9.1.0.4674

    Pros

nothing yet - trying desperately to delete unwanted registry entries

    Cons

brand new computer, first d/l software...think I'll try a new open office solution - bad choice! WPS immediately installs browser redirects - all my tabs open to trovi.com, and they are multiplying. Seriously. First download.

    Summary

Stay away unless you like browser redirects. Try Apache OO instead - they don't mess with you.

"great & free substitute for MS Office"

    July 26, 2014   |   By vetsense

    Version: WPS Office 2014 Beta 1 9.1.0.4674

    Pros

familiar interface, easy to use, no problems working with documents saved in MS programs

    Cons

    None that I've found

    Summary

I've used Kingsoft Office for several years on my laptops, while I maintained MS Office on my desktop, and have had no problems switching between the two and (although other reviews seem worried about it) I've had no problems, junk, viruses, or spyware from their product, in spite of it being from China, LOL. I don't know what's behind the name change......maybe it's like Nissan going back to their original name once they'd gained acceptance under the "international" name.

"Best Microsoft Office clone around! <br />And it's free!"

    July 23, 2014   |   By pickycustomer

    Version: WPS Office 2014 Beta 1 9.1.0.4674

    Pros

    Perfect for home and school.

    Cons

    None found here.

    Summary

If you need an office suite which is basically an MS Office clone, WPS Office Free is for you. WPS opens and saves projects to MS formats without any issues. WPS opens to a start screen which contains links to templates, an online help manual and tips on how the user can use WPS to its fullest. WPS has a small HDD footprint and uses little resources. WPS has a tabbed interface which makes switching between multiple projects extremely simple. Whether you are composing a letter, term paper, research paper, spreadsheets or a power point presentation WPS Free is absolutely ideal.

I have done my best with every tool I can think of and have yet to find any spyware, malware, backdoor trojans or "any" form of virus in WPS Free. I ran all these tests because with WPS being from China I was, to say the least, a bit wary. Nothing found...no harm.

Bottom line, you can't go wrong with WPS Free. I highly recommend using WPS Office Free. Just download, install and start using this light, yet powerful office suite.

    "Made in China : Beware"

    July 22, 2014   |   By narayan_v

    Version: WPS Office 2014 Beta 1 9.1.0.4674

    Pros

It saves to docx, thus the file size in reduced. Nice clean and fresh feeling to interface.

    Cons

Made in china, Can be subverted later or right upon install or updates. Make it a spying tool of Chinese hackers or worse the state. Just don't trust it enough.

Saving to .doc format makes it unreadable in open office and ms office. So it will not work.

    Summary

Install at your own risk and wisdom or lack thereoff
