CNET Editors' review
KeePass Password Safe Professional provides a helpful directory for remembering passwords and keeping them secure. While its layout was slightly confusing, its excellent results made us very happy, and to top it off, it's free.
The program's interface has a stark, directionless layout that initially turned us off. However, a visit to the Help file's instructions and some experimenting quickly opened this program up, and it actually proved to be easy to use. The program's functionality is quite simple: Follow an onscreen menu to enter a Web site's information and its corresponding user name and password. This entry is stored in an alphabetical directory with all your other entries, much like a digital filing card system. You can look up any forgotten password stored there, which will inevitably save a great deal of time and frustration. You must enter a Master password to open the program, which keeps your sensitive information safe from prying eyes and adds an overall level of security. KeePass also provided a strong feature that randomly generates passwords to meet specific security requirements, offering yet another way to secure your data and activities. KeePass might have offered a clearer layout, but its ability to generate, store and retrieve passwords was excellent. Use it, and you won't have to keep using the same passwords over and over again, just to remember them. Unwise.
KeePass Password Safe Professional is freeware. Its strengths at saving passwords outweigh any negatives, and we recommend this excellent security tool to all users.
Publisher's Description
From Dominik Reichl:
KeePass is a password manager which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. You can put all your passwords in one database, which is locked with one master key or a key-disk. So you only have to remember one single master password or insert the key-disk to unlock the whole database. Databases are encrypted using very secure encryption algorithms (AES and Twofish).
What's new in this version: Version 2.18 has update check now also checks for plugin updates and when closing the entry editing dialog by closing the window.

"Very Good: Like it a lot; my new password word manager."
Version: KeePass Password Safe Professional 2.18
Pros
What I like most is the Auto Type feature as I have multiple user IDs and passwords. Plus I now keep useful information in the NOTES section so I have everything (including phone numbers, serial numbers, etc.) in one place. And it is free! However, I still use my browsers favorites more often than the Open URL feature for frequently used web sites. But a technologically savvy friend loves RoboForm so you might want to check it out also.
Cons
It takes several mouse clicks to get to the URL and have KeePass "automatically" enter the ID and PW. But who can predict how long it will take a web page to come up and be ready for data entry? Also, I found that the shortcuts of Ctrl+V and Ctrl+U do not always work on my Windows XP-SP3 PC. So KeePass still has a few "rough edges" and is not perfect in my opinion.
Also, now that all of that sensitive information is on your computer, one needs to protect it. Keep a copy of the file off site as well as on a thumb drive.Summary
I recommend KeePass 2 (or some other password manager). I found it fast and easy to implement. Read the instructions and it is easy. KeePass forced me to get organized. I also changed some of my passwords to be more secure. And I finally added a Windows User sign-on password as an extra measure of protection.
I suggest that you make your KeePass Master Password extremely secure as it is now the only one you need to remember. Mine is over a dozen characters in length and it contain both upper case and lower case alpha plus numeric and special characters.
And again, back-up (also off site) ... especially the *.kdbx file. -
