Summary
Had a problem trying to edit half a dozen quicktime (.mov) files using Windows Movie Maker on my old (Windows XP) laptop and since getting a new Win7 one with Windows Live Movie Maker, I hoped it'd be simpler. It wasn't! But at least the errors I was getting on some of them was suggesting that I was missing some codecs. After a little hunting on here, I found this one and installed it. And then it just worked!

I can play nearly every file by one means or another & I'm sure that K-lite helps. It's free.
Cons
Most programs tell you what changes there are in newer versions. I can't find this info for K-lite. I'm guessing that ver. 8 is better than ver. 7.
Summary
A review by cmex 31Aug11 explained the differences between basic, standard, full & mega 32 bit versions. There is only one version (mega) for 64 bit systems. The 32 bit hierarchy tricked my understanding of English. I thought "full" would be the version with most codecs, but no, "mega" is, even though there isn't a million codecs there.
I downloaded the mega which is probably a lot more than I need because I can't stand having a file that I can't play.
Even mega doesn't play everything. I used Real to copy a streamed radio audio file and for some reason it, it saved it as a .ivr file (internet video recording) & K-lite couldn't open it. I recorded a similar program the same way & it was saved as .ra. K-lite could open the .ra. I think when playing .ra in Media Player Classic, it uses the same Cook codec that Real uses.
I watch most videos in VLC & it plays a video that was .rv but mislabelled .avi & needs codec YVU9. Media Player Classic or Real wouldn't play it as a .avi. When I changed the suffix to .rv, MPC played it OK as did Real. -

Regarding the "cons"...Some other codec packs skip one or two of the more obscure codecs, so if they happen to be the one you're after it can be annoying...if you're having a codec problem then this is the best download to get you started as it's likely to fix it 99 times out of 100...
