K-Lite Codec Pack (64-bit) is a collection of DirectShow filters, VFW or ACM codecs, and tools. Codecs and DirectShow filters are needed for encoding and decoding audio and video formats. The K-Lite Codec Pack is designed as a user-friendly solution for playing all your audio and movie files.
It includes automatically configuration of components to work together in perfect harmony, options to activate thumbnail generation in Windows Explorer, and tweak the options to your own specific needs and preferences.

"Lets you tweak codecs"

Pros
One of the tweaks is the Thumbnail view of most videos. Since installing this most videos play in the player.
Cons
I haven't found any yet. They just keep on improving it.
Summary
If you find a lot of videos sent to you don't play, download and install this pack. You will be more than satisfied with the results.

"VLC is better"

It's free & easy to use.
Cons
Even with the large number of codecs K-Lite has, there are still some files it won't play that VLC will.
On my Win7 64 bit machine, it plays .flac files 6 seconds behind the timing so when the timing pointer reaches the end & playback stops, there is still 6 seconds to go & you miss out on the last few seconds. VLC plays the same piece properly. It's strange that the 32 bit version on a Vista machine works properly.Summary
I keep my version of K-Lite up to date in case it overtakes VLC in usefulness. At the moment VLC is better. I especially like the VLC function of the + and - keys for instantly speeding up and slowing down video replays.
We're in the wonderful position to have both of these programs for free. -

My previous experiences with K-Lite codes were rather good. But not on this instance though. After installation, my Windows Media Player could not play a few earlier playable format (flv, and some avi files). Plus, there were a couple more files that remains unplayable. What gives, K-Lite?

While all of the various filters and codecs are available from their native sites (or I assume they are), K-Lite does a fantastic job of collecting them all and presenting them in one easy-to-install package, and keeps them all updated with the most recent versions. Somebody puts a lot of work into this, and then passes it on to us for free. How can you improve on that?

Summary
cnet needs to remove this NOW, it may have been malware free when first submitted, but it's bogus now and the malware free claim may cause them trouble. Bad rep at least.
