CNET Editors' review
Isolator is a small, simple application designed to enhance your productivity by reducing visual distractions. Isolator can blur, cover up, or hide all other application windows and the dock, with a quick keystroke or by clicking on Isolator's icon in the menu bar.
You can set blur intensity, background color, opacity, and fade speed, and you can choose from several options for how Isolator is activated and whether it opens on start-up. The developer behind Isolator has done an excellent job of adding functionality in successive updates (like the blur effect and support for multiple monitors) while making sure that this free application still feels smooth and streamlined. Anyone who wants help staying focused should definitely check out Isolator.
Publisher's Description
From Ben Willmore:
Isolator is a small menu bar application that helps you concentrate. When you're working on a document, and don't want to be distracted, turn on Isolator. It will cover up your desktop and all the icons on it, as well as the windows of all your other applications, so you can concentrate on the task in hand.
What's new in this version: Added blur and other effects to background windows; suspend Isolator when Finder is frontmost; multiple bug fixes.

"Great tweak! I've been looking all over for this!"
Version: Isolator 4.4
Pros
Provides flexible options to make your front-most windows take prominence while windows from other apps recede visually into the background. Choose from various levels of dimming the background windows, blurring or softening the background windows.
Cons
COuld uses slightly more control over the blur effect to make it softer or lighter. It would be nice to combine effects (blur + "bloom") or have few additional effects
Summary
Nice way to give focus to a busy screen.

This little utility is easy to set up, has just the right number of options, and simply makes the Mac more usable. No more Option-Command-H (Hide Others) every two minutes! -
"A Must Have"

Simply brilliant. I run this with menu eclipse or simply configure the mac menu to hide using presentyourapps and you've got a distraction free work space. You can turn any program into a distraction free program with Isolator. I've tried the others but this is the best out there. -
"This is FANTASTIC!!"
Version: Isolator 4.0
Summary

I didn't know I could like a tiny piece of software that much! It's brilliant for making screenshots (I'm writing a book at the moment = loads of screenshots), cause I can set the background to white and it even covers my desktop icons. It also takes away that annoying drop shadow under the menu bar.
Ok, so that's not the main purpose why this thing was developed, but it sure is a great help for me. I definitely will donate some money to whoever made this... once my publisher pays me. :-) -
"can't see desktop when in finder"
Version: Isolator 3.3
Summary

the only frustrating thing is it hides the desktop when you want to be in the finder. any workarounds for that? it's great to hide the desktop when your in another app, but you need to see it when using the finder. -
"Wonderful!"
Version: Isolator 1.02b
Summary

In conjunction with KeyboardMaestro and Butler, this little gem does wonders in cleaning up my workspace (simpler than the old MenuStrip which did something similar but with lots of other, at least for me, unnecessary features). Press the Function key and everything but the active app and the desktop with icons disappears. Cycyle through apps and each time only the active app remains in view. If you need to see two apps then toggle Isolator OFF and the next app you cycle to will appear with the most recent still visible behind it. To get rid of it, simply toggle the function key ON. Very simple, clean, and efficient. A must have.
BUT appears to be broken under Leopard which is one reason, along with waiting for Butler, that I've delayed changing over.
