CNET Editors' review
The name might not be the most creative, but the Internet Download Manager does exactly what it promises: helps you download and organize files. The best part is that you can schedule downloads and use filters to get the specific files you want.
The compact interface is packed with options, but the main features are easily accessed from a toolbar at the top. We would have liked to see a bit more user guidance up front, but a tutorial does cover the basics, and there is a more detailed Help file if you get stuck. You can also go the easier route with the program's integrated Web browser options, which work with nearly all of the most popular browsers, including Internet Explorer and Firefox. Each time the program recognizes a video in FLV format on a site like YouTube, you'll see a button, and it's one click and you're off and running. From the main interface, all you have to do is add the URL for a video to get started. A new window shows you the status and allows you to pause the recording and set up a few options for what to do with the file once the download completes. As advertised, the speed was good and we didn't have any issues with test files we downloaded, which included MP3s, FLVs, and MPEGs. Our favorite feature was the scheduler, which was easy to set up and lets you choose where and when the program will download files. We especially liked the fact that if you lose your Internet connection, the program will resume downloading your selected or scheduled files once everything's up and running again.
The download and installation of IDM was easy and fast, and it uninstalled cleanly. If you're looking for a program that you can basically set and forget to video downloads, this is a good option.
Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Internet Download Manager 6.12 build 15.

"IDM is the best download manager on earth for humans"
Version: Internet Download Manager 6.12 build 26
Pros
If you're hunting down big files on the web then Internet Download Manager is a way to go. It is easy to work with and It does cut down the downloading time significantly. I personally experienced that it could accelerate my download speed upto 4 to 5 times, on my dial up internet connection.
All of us know that browser inbuilt download managers are not so effective in terms of speed and download resume function. So IDM takes care of all that.
It works well on windows 8, I have used it on win 8 for past week and latest update provides a more efficient integration to IE 10. IDM is truely made for people who work fast and want work to be done in perfect, elegant and fast way without banging up their heads when network connection is lost, or power failure etc.
It works with chrome, firefox, safari as well. Its costumer care is also good and they provide timely update to keep IDM bug free.
Finally would suggest you to download the 1-month trial and experience IDM at work.Cons
On the whole its a brilliant application and I personally didn't find any drawbacks.
If you do find one, just mail the support and write on their forum and I think they would resolve it in next upgrade versionSummary
First of all let me share my true experience or testamony few months bact
Few weeks back when I was downloading Windows 8 costumer perview version .iso file. At the verge of finish i.e almost 90% of download was over my internet connection got disconnected and to my utter dismay I lost the entire download and Chrome said download was interupted please restart your download.
This was the time I realised the need for a good download manager, If I would have IDM at that time I wouldn't had to restart the download again. In fact this month I had downloaded windows 8 professional final version, Mathematica 9 and Matlab R2012b, in two days without any headache or fear of connectivety loss with IDM. I had used scheduler to download them at night when I had nice sweet dreams and it logged in automatically to wolfram portal and Matlab server to download the files, as net is extremely slow during day in my country. Downloading movies of file over 1gb is nightmare for people like me if you don't have a good download manager which I had found as Internet Download Manager
Most of you reading this review might say when there are many free download managers, Why pay of Internet download manager?
My answer would be, I have tried all the free download managers but they are just the same as inbuilt download managers, they don't increase speed as IDM does. And if you consider all the paid download managers then I have tried many of them on my friends and relatives computers, But I found IDM was always the best one. In terms of speed and other features. And now they also admit that IDM is powerful and worth being consideredamongst the best.
Configuring IDM is not a big deal. All options are easy to understand and you can refer to the help file for additional information. The settings include the possibility to set a key combination that prevents IDM from taking over the download task. The same is available to force the application to undertake the job.
Moreover, you can customize the type of files for which the download should start automatically as well as define the storage path for each file category predefined in the program.
Customization goes further, allowing you to define the maximum number of connection IDM should initiate. The default value is 8, but you can go enable as much as 16 simultaneous connections. Additionally, exceptions for the number of threads can be defined for specific servers that send the data. Should access to remote files require login credentials, IDM is ready to store and apply them automatically when necessary.
For each queue list created you can define a schedule and enforce an action (exit the application, turn off computer) when the download job completes. The program supports as many queue lists as you can create and offers easy management.
IDM lets you set the download location for the file, shows the size of the download job and the URL. The options available let you initiate the task or postpone it for a later time. Going with the second choice allows adding the file to a download queue, which can be processed at a time you define in the scheduler.
With support for creating multiple queues, Internet Download Manager proves to be a very versatile program, ready to tackle any need. It organizes the files into predefined folders, according to their type. All default download locations can be changed to places that suit you best.
Looks are not impressive, but the layout of the interface is easy to handle and intuitive. Download categories and available queues run down in the left hand part of the screen while in the right there are all the items that have been downloaded or waiting to get to your system (queued).
In order to preserve your bandwidth for other tasks as well, IDM comes with the possibility to impose speed limits. These can be applied individually, per each download, or you can set the same limit for all of them.
Other features include automatic virus checking and the ability to download all files linked to a page. The new version has a Web spider that can analyze a site and retrieve, for example, all the images on it.
Internet Download Manager strikes us as a natural choice for users in need of a trusty transfer tool. Latest version has an added FLV grabber that can be used to download videos from YouTube, Google Video, MySpaceTV, and other popular sites. -
"Caused system processes to slow"
Version: Internet Download Manager 6.12 build 26
Pros
This software did what many samey software does. Not slower but not faster either.
Cons
Since installing IDM , my firewall informs data going out more than being downloaded. I do not trust this program at all.
Summary
The untrustworthy update from IDM caused my pc problems as I did not want to pay up.
-
"Outdated software"
Version: Internet Download Manager 6.12 build 26
Pros
No freebies automatically offered during installation.
Cons
Not making sense to pay when so many others are free.
Summary
I found this trial "Idm" too slow!
-
"Great software!"
Version: Internet Download Manager 6.12 build 26
Pros
Great to use for people on satellite that have an access policy, but have unlimited from midnight until 5:00AM. So, you can schedule most of your downloads after midnight. Great for downloading movies and music, without the penalties.
Cons
A little confusing as to where the downloads go automatically, so recommend making a folder on the desktop and change the settings to download to that folder, so you can find them the next day.
Summary
Great software for people that have an access policy with their satellite company.

"Maybe not 5 times but certainly INCREASED speed"
Version: Internet Download Manager 6.12 build 26
Pros
Love Chrome and now I don't have to worry about lost data after 40 minutes of download from a broken connection on Tanzania's cellular networks. So far haven't had to wait that long for anything. Previously only e-mail attachments took... not so long a time to download.
Cons
I just started downloading and didn't work on any configurations. If it can be configured, I'd love to be able to see a list (with at least numerical progress) of everything I'm downloading instead of every item opening on its own.
Summary
Save for a download list, IDM is doing everything I want it to do and FAST!
-
"Incredibly fast downloading ability"
Version: Internet Download Manager 6.12 build 26
Pros
Integrates nicely with Mozilla fire fox and Google chrome my choice internet browser. Takes over download links rapidly. Downloads files very fast. In an instance it downloaded 30 MB in two and half minutes. Low annual fee.
Cons
I have not observed any disadvantage.
Summary
If you do downloads regularly procure IDM.
