Don't let the dull name fool you: Internet Download Manager is a full-featured package that handles downloading tasks with aplomb. It conveniently integrates into your browser, even if you use Mozilla or Opera.
It automatically sorts incoming files by file type and puts them in the appropriate folder. Most importantly, it supercharges download speeds (it doubled ours). Its windowed interface is clean and easy to understand. Power users can take advantage of the command line interface to resume file transfers, schedule downloads, connect through dial-up, or log on to password-protected sites. Experienced users also can limit the number of connections, the download speeds for specific sites, and even create an exception list to block specific, user-defined sites.
Other features include automatic virus checking and the ability to download all files linked to a page. The new version has a Web spider that can analyze a site and retrieve, for example, all the images on it.
Internet Download Manager strikes us as a natural choice for users in need of a trusty transfer tool. Version 5.11 build 5 added FLV grabber that can be used to download videos from YouTube, Google Video, MySpaceTV, and other popular sites.

The program will resume unfinished downloads due to lost connections, network problems, or unexpected power outages. It can connect to the Internet at a set time, download the files you want, and disconnect or shut down your computer when it's done. It supports FTP, HTTP, and SHTTP protocols, MP3 audio files, and MPEG video-content processing.

Version: Internet Download Manager 4.05 build 3
"Good, but poor on some sites"
Pros: Using a normal internet download didn't really help giving me the full download speed I needed from my 2MB Broadband, so I downloaded this and it gave me a download from 150kb per a second to 250KB per a second.
Cons: However, it does not work on some download sites, such as this one, I tried a numberous times to download files from download.com, it eventually downloaded, but it took about 5 minutes to reconize the file to download.

Version: Internet Download Manager 4.05 build 3
"Work in various connection type"
Pros: I had upgraded into the full version. The registration process was easy, the software developer will posting the URL to your e-mail where you can follow the link to download the full version. The IDM work fine for various type of connections. I installed the IDM into my desktop at office and also at home. I used the proxy T1/1Mb intranet connection at office and 512Kb broadband at home. I also used the IDM with dial-up 56kb connection when my 512kb broadband was down last week. It worked fine with all the connections.
The IDM can be integrated into IE & you can instruct the IDM to download from any link. The integration with Mozilla firefox v.1.06 was not fully automated. However it is still possible to download by copying the URL into IDM under the "add new URL" before proceed with the download.
The full version also support multi-languages such as English, Arabic, Chech, Germans, Spanish, Japanese, Italian, Francis and Dutch.
Support service excellent, which is good for installing the latest patch.
Cons: Speed is rather "so...so..." & not very much to proud of.
Please be reminded that the above experience was encountered with full version IDM only.

Version: Internet Download Manager 4.05 build 3
Pros: Same as most free download managers when it comes to multipart/resume downloads.
I have been using LeechGet 2004 till now but as soon as I installed the newer 2005 version, it stopped working ...*sigh*
I am currently evaluating all download managers to pick one that is safe and does what it says, so cannot recommend anything as of now, sorry.
Cons: This program installs a LSP ( a service provider over your current TCP/IP stack) located in a DLL named idmmbc.dll. What it does is monitor all your internet traffic and when you exceed your trial period, cause system instability to outright broken internet access ( when you uninstall it, it breaks the LSP chain irreversibly). If you don't believe me, use a system explorer( say Microsoft Anti-spyware or Autorun from sysinternals) and take a look.
You ask me what happens when you try to remove the spyware? well this is what happens( After running idmmbc.dll through an hex editor):
"idmvers IDMBI Software\DownloadManager\ Internet Download Manager detected that its registry keys had been damaged since the last run. It's possible that you run a flaky spyware remover program which corrupted system registry. Internet Download Manager will try to restore all damaged data, but some data may remain corrupted. Reading of idmvers in idmmbc failed, process = %s, res1 = %ld, res2 = %ld"
Download at maximum risk to your system !!!
**A crusader for free safe software**
