The problem with HiDownload is not that it fails but that it falls short. This streaming-media download manager requires advanced user operation and add-on programs to accomplish its basic task. An interface that resembles a spreadsheet combines with download procedures better found in a shuttle launch. HiDownload will download media files. We pulled down MP3 files from download sites with no trouble. The program uses multithreading to quickly grab a file, and it is easy to schedule downloads while you sleep.
But downloading streaming media from popular video Web sites reveals HiDownload's shortcomings. These Web sites obscure media links, and HiDownload requires an add-on to find the correct link. The program lacks a wizard to help novices navigate the many options. Although it includes an option to download Quicktime Streams, choosing it displays a message that the option is not yet available. HiDownload leaves users with a dilemma: the application is too complex to download simple media files with obvious links, but it just isn't enough for video capturing.
