Halo for Mac

Publisher's Description

From MacSoft:

You are the last of your kind. Bred for combat, built for war. You will fight on foot, in vehicles, in the air and beneath the surface of a mysterious alien ring orbiting in the depths of space.

Recognized as one of the greatest achievements in video game entertainment, the Xbox version of Halo has already sold over 3 million units and continues to be a top seller. The Macintosh version adds 16-person online multiplayer, new vehicles, new weapons, new maps, customizable multiplayer games, the precision of playing with a mouse and keyboard and more.

What's new in this version: The Mac code has been synchronized with version 1.04 of the PC code (Build 607). The PC code had been updated with a GameSpy Security Hot-Fix that addresses a rare crash bug that could occur if a malicious individual (hacker) purposely tries to exploit the GameSpy CDKey SDK on either Mac OS X or Windows.

    "awesome product for the mac!"

    October 8, 2010  |   By planit

    Version: Halo 2.0.4

    Pros

innovative realistic programming motor based on behaviour of springs and balls

    Cons

some of the language can get out of hand between gamers, so there should be an age cert on this product

    Summary

Halo is a legendary game and with the online multiplayer facility gives endless hours of entertainment. A groundbreaker in terms of realistic gameplay.

Few know that Halo was developed on macs:

Long before being released to microsoft hence it runs and looks much smoother in my opinion!

    "UNIVERSAL ONLY???"

    August 11, 2008  |   By nunya.business

    Version: Halo 2.0.2

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The updater says it must locate the original universal application on the hard drive. We'll my version isn't "universal" and as far as I know the "original" version wasn't universal either. So my question is; WTH?!? This is still a great game and I hope we aren't going to be left out in the cold.

    "VERY fine update!"

    December 30, 2004  |   By Baboon

    Version: Halo 1.5

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Hello! Halo 1.5 in combination with Mac OS X 10.3.7 is a HUGE improvement. In 10.3.5 with Halo 1.05 I could play Halo not very fluent in 800x600, only 640x480 was fine, 1024 was really slooow. (everything with Vertex and Pixel shaders + pretty high detail)

But now with both updates it runs really smooth in 1024x640, even faster than in 800x600 before. It runs actually as fast as it did in 640x480 before!!
Finally it's fun to play it on the iMac G5 17" display! - Also different other games now run smooth in 1024 + shaders! 10.3.7 is GREAT improvement for iMac G5 and games. 1.5 for Halo made it even more fluent and really, really fine now!

    Thank you both!!

    Version: Halo 1.5

    Summary

Well I've been the biggest moaner of the lot waiting for MacSoft to get their finger out and I must admit they've WELL surpassed my expectations. This is a stonkingly excellent update; running on 10.28 on 1.25Ghz G4 with Radeon 9000, I can now see the green shield effect on other players when I shoot them; zooooomm is just that... super fast and perfectly clear.

But the big thing for me is keeping up with the PC boys... we've actually stormed passed them now! ROFL.

    Kudos to MacSoft!

    "Acceptable..."

    Version: Halo 1.5

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
The update (1.5) does indeed improve the performance on my 12" Powerbook (1.3 GHz) - but not too much. I did not notice any problems with the character animations like some reported, but my gamepad (Logitech Dual Action) doesn't work. On the other hand - who wants to play an FPS with a gamepad?

    Version: Halo 1.5

    Summary

This upgrade didn't do much for me. The graphics are still blured when zooming in. Though I have not really tried messing with the settings very much. I have a CH Products USB gamepad that isn't seen. This maybe a driver problem and not the fault of the game. Otherwise the game plays fine, no crashes so far. Can't wait for Halo-2!

    "Release fails miserably"

    December 17, 2004  |   By MacDev--2008

    Version: Halo 1.5

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Bah! On a Powerbook G4 1.5GHZ running Mac OS X 10.3.6, with a logitech USB mouse, I am barely able to play halo due to the mouse always shooting to the four corners of the screen. This causes me to wind up spinning in circles pointed straight down or up, and getting killed without fail in most combat scenarios!!! Worst of all, after quitting Halo the weird mouse behavior continues to happen! Rebooting, upgrading to 10.3.7, and using other usb mice did NOT fix the problem! And all this for a game which has been originally released YEARS ago! So sad that the company which originally developed on the Mac cannot pay attention to it anymore! Thanks Microsoft...

    "Major changes..."

    December 17, 2004  |   By kmn

    Version: Halo 1.5

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
First of all... beware those of you who do not have access to vertex or pixel shaders, apparently some configurations cause the no-shader path graphics to become distorted. I've checked on my configuration and there are no problems, but there definitely seems to be problems for some people, however whether this is directly related to Halo or to Mac OS X isn't entirely clear.

Otherwise, look forward to lots of optimizations (especially lens flares on 10.3.5+, you can set them to high or extreme with little to no penalty now), Macsoft did a really great job with this one.

Oh and about this not being on Macsoft's website yet and the version numbers... this is usually the case, oftentimes the files are sent out to mac game download sites first to better handle the load I guess. The version number is synced with PC 1.06 code, but there are so many changes it's more appropriate to give the mac version a 0.5 increase.

    "Version 1.5 Appears to be Buggy . . ."

    December 16, 2004  |   By VersionTrackerUserOpinion

    Version: Halo 1.5

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Installed v1.5 a few hours ago and discovered that characters appear to have a sniper rifle stuck in them, and they move around like lifeless marionettes--no arm or leg movement, just looks like they're being dragged by some unseen puppeteer. Kind of funny, really; but also rather annoying.

Gameplay is otherwise OK, but I reverted back to v1.0.5.3 because I was annoyed by the graphics bug. I'd wait for the bug-fix version that I suspect will be coming out within the next few days.

Incidentally, I'm running OS X 10.3.7 with an ATI Radeon 8500 and didn't have any graphics issues in any of the previous versions.
