Editors' review

GIMPshop is a remixed version of the open source, free GIMP image editor. Using plug-ins, it unifies the separate editing panes of the GIMP under one main window, so that the program functions similarly to every other standard app. It also renames most of GIMP's unique terminology with labels more familiar to Photoshop users. This has the great benefit of making many of Photoshop's tutorials applicable to this GIMP and Photoshop mashup.

Although the bogarting of Photoshop tutorials is cool, the BackgroundWindow plug-in isn't the most stable. Also, the current GIMPshop is built off of an older GIMP. The newer version loads faster, processes images faster, has a cleaner layout, refined tools, and comes with better preloaded plug-ins. Newer extensions either won't work well with GIMPshop, or they won't work at all.

GIMPshop strikes a hard bargain between the upgrade sacrifices and the Photoshopesque style, but for users who can accept that GIMP can do for free most but not all of what Photoshop can, we'd recommend giving GIMPshop a pass.

    "A good usable tool if you can't afford Photoshop"

    April 16, 2014   |   By theoldpaperman

    Version: GIMPshop 2.2.8

    Pros

    It works and does exactly what it says on the tin

    Cons

    Took a little getting used to to find where the various tools were and how they worked.

    Summary

    Really surprised at the negative comments, sure it took me a little while to re-learn some of the moves after 20 years using various editions of Photoshop, but this is free and does the job well. One word of warning though, do make sure you refuse all the 'bloat ware' as you go through the download process otherwise you will spend an unnecessary hour or more finding and deleting it afterwards. Another strange thing is that to save files in anything but Gimp's native format you have to export it, say as a TIFF or JPEG or whatever but apart from that no insurmountable problems. So I would say go for it. Oh I only gave it 3 stars because it isn't quite as intuitive as perhaps it could be.

    "Bloatware. Spyware. Malware. Do NOT Install!"

    March 15, 2014   |   By SoftwareTestPilot

    Version: GIMPshop 2.2.8

    Pros

    None. ZERO. Nada.

    Cons

    Do NOT install this software. It's full of BLOATWARE. You go through four screens of what you think are "accept terms of service", when in actuality you are accepting to download the bloatware. The right button is clearly visible "ACCEPT" while the left button "do not accept" is hidden in shaded grey. Makes it appear as though you will be refused to download the software. It's all bloatware even if you deny everything and complete installation. I have Windows 7. I've had to buy a program to remove several of the bloatwares hidden but still activate. Malwarebytes has quarantined numerous threats.

    Summary

    Unreal. It's free, but free is destroying your computer and allowing vulnerabilities. You will be hacked.

    "STAY AWAY - "Gimpshop" IS A SCAM"

    January 29, 2014   |   By muspelhem

    Version: GIMPshop 2.2.8

    Pros

    Nothing good to be said.

    Cons

    DON'T DOWNLOAD THIS. It's regular GIMP, wrapped in an installer with all sorts of bloatware. What's worse, according to some, it also installs malware. See these links for more info:

    "Loaded with malware"

    June 21, 2013   |   By brany99

    Version: GIMPshop 2.2.8

    Pros

    None. Help files were not avail had to download them by hand in pdf format-421 pages

    Cons

    It comes with a ton of add-on affiliate software, including conduit, which hijacked every browser. It says you can delete the programs, but add/remove programs didn't come close to getting all the files out. Even going in and deleted every file by hand didn't fix the problems this software caused. Using an image I saved in it crashed my website too.

    Summary

    Worse than junk.

    "CRAP! Don't - I repeat - don't try it!"

    December 28, 2011   |   By doloppost

    Version: GIMPshop 2.2.8

    Pros

    - it appears to have lots of options;

    Cons

    - changing the paper from standing to laying, has no effect;
    - can't make a selection to really delete it; selection stays around to mess with everything you do thereafter;
    - can't crop the image;

    in short: it works counter intuitive.

    Summary

    don't even try it. It looks like a good one, its a very bad one. In Dutch: KUT programma.

    "Nice idea, but too unstable"

    July 11, 2010   |   By perfectblue97

    Version: GIMPshop 2.2.8

    Pros

    * Easy to use
    * A good compromise for people who are used to Photoshop at work or through college but who can't afford their own copy
    * Contain a lot of features that affordable software like Photoshop Elements doesn't contain

    Cons

    * It's just too unstable

    Summary

    When I first heard about this product I jumped at the chance of downloading it. I've used Photoshop before and am used to the interface, but I can't afford to buy a copy of my own, and while I liked the features provided Gimp I just couldn't get on with the GUI, or the way that it calls common controls and features by non industry standard names.

    However, I found Gimpshop to be too unstable. It crashed so much that I just gave up and went back to Gimp because it was easier for me to struggle with the interface than it was for me to keep reloading Gimpshop and redoing the unsaved work between the crashes.

    It's not even as if I'm using some ropey old PC with a copy of XP that's been hacked and slashed for years. I've got a stable system.

    Sorry, great idea, but not usable on my PC. If it didn't crash I'd give it 4 or 5 stars.
