FrostWire is a fork of the LimeWire source code, and as such, it functions exactly the same. When you search for a file using FrostWire, you get results from LimeWire, and vice versa.

However, the user experience differs in two ways. One is that the code is actually based on LimeWire Pro, the paid version of the popular P2P client, so users don't have to worry about simultaneous download restrictions, and they won't get bombarded by ads. Also, befitting the name, the interface has changed from green to blue and has been slightly improved. Tabs have rounded corners, and there are two additions, as well. Connections monitors your outgoing and incoming connections by host name, but also provides bandwidth information, the vendor and version being used, and more. There's also a built-in community chat.

When we tested it, the built-in media player in FrostWire didn't work with MP3s or MPGs, although those files worked fine in LimeWire and elsewhere. The app also comes bundled with the ASK toolbar, but you can opt out of that during the installation process. While some people have experienced faster download times with FrostWire compared with its parent, others have not. FrostWire and LimeWire are practically indistinguishable, although the lack of ads is a big plus.

"Good download app if your system can handle it."

December 27, 2010  |  By antifanboi

 |  Version: FrostWire 4.21.1

Pros

Great with torrents, multiple hits on p2p requests. Champions indie productions at startup.

Cons

It will kill you if you're generous with your files.

Summary

Frostwire can be a great tool if you're cruising the torrents for the latest episode of "Walking Dead". I've managed to garner an entire season without any problem. Lots of good hits when looking for movies or files via p2p. The only serious issue is if you feel like being a good samaritan and share the fruits of your labours (ie the entire Steely Dan or Steeleye Span back-catalogue), expect your rig to get a good spanking resource-wise. Once all your files get catalogued by FW, the masses will come. I had to uninstall it to avoud blowing up my system. But it does champion Creative Commons talent, and I've discovered some real gems amongst the grunge. But I won't be generous with my tunes again. (The Morrissey collection shall remain untouched!)

"God save us all!"

December 27, 2010  |  By shaunk37

 |  Version: FrostWire 4.21.1

Pros

for once - None!

Cons

didn't work the first time i downloaded it, saying connection problems. The second installation, it worked, but it just happened the first file i downloaded contained spam or malware. basically all subsequent files downloaded had the same result.

Summary

Thank God i have a strong anti-virus, malware detection, and firewall. My friends were all into the Frostwire rave, and i decided to give it a try. Sorry, next time maybe. With the amount of crap on this thing, I don't get why the fudge people even bother with this :(
