FrostWire is a fork of the LimeWire source code, and as such, it functions exactly the same. When you search for a file using FrostWire, you get results from LimeWire, and vice versa.
However, the user experience differs in two ways. One is that the code is actually based on LimeWire Pro, the paid version of the popular P2P client, so users don't have to worry about simultaneous download restrictions, and they won't get bombarded by ads. Also, befitting the name, the interface has changed from green to blue and has been slightly improved. Tabs have rounded corners, and there are two additions, as well. Connections monitors your outgoing and incoming connections by host name, but also provides bandwidth information, the vendor and version being used, and more. There's also a built-in community chat.
When we tested it, the built-in media player in FrostWire didn't work with MP3s or MPGs, although those files worked fine in LimeWire and elsewhere. The app also comes bundled with the ASK toolbar, but you can opt out of that during the installation process. While some people have experienced faster download times with FrostWire compared with its parent, others have not. FrostWire and LimeWire are practically indistinguishable, although the lack of ads is a big plus.
Publisher's description
From FrostWire :FrostWire is a fork of the very popular LimeWire PRO Gnutella/Bittorrent client. The purpose of FrostWire is to keep and maintain the freedoms that LimeWire LLC may be forced to withdraw. Share any type of file on Gnutella and the Bittorrent network.
CNET Editor's Note: FrostWire is bundled with Ask.com toolbar. Installation of this component is optional.

Version: FrostWire 4.18.1
"Does what it says. Great price (free!)"
Pros: Limewire Pro w/o the $$$
Cons: None yet..
Summary: P2P can always be iffy (as in dangerous & possibly not legal). If you pay attention you can block most bad downloads. I really like Frostwire & have used it for years, be careful on the install unless you want the "extras".

Version: FrostWire 4.18.1
"Fair for music searches, I recommend Ares"
Pros: Easy to install. Free. Good for searching for music. Connects faster than Limewire. Multiple search capability. User friendly interface.
Cons: Loaded with fake files!!! You'll have to repeat your searches several times to get what you want. Downloads hardly finish.
Summary: Not a bad p2p, but most searches will give you nothing but sketchy fake files, especially if you're looking for music. Also your downloads may never get to finish since it has a nasty habit of starting one download then switching over to the next in... read more >>

Version: FrostWire 4.18.1
"I been using Frostwire for a while"
Pros: Quick and easy to install and it is free. You can find some good movies if you know how to find the best users to download from.
Cons: it is hard to find good music. You get lucky every now and then. There are a lot of fake file, trojans and other junk that you have to watch out for.
Summary: Frostwire is OK to use, but I'm sure there is better. I've used it for a long time now. I like better than Limewire.

Version: FrostWire 4.18.1
"Not the best way to pull free music"
Pros: Free of charge
Integrated search featureCons: Not the best way to get free music (there are better alternatives such as iGetMusic)
Summary: P2P networks have become popular as a way to get access (more or less legally) to, among other things, free music. FrostWire 4.18.1 certainly is a premier app to search for and download MP3s. However, there are some serious drawbacks that are often ... read more >>

Version: FrostWire 4.18.1
"Quick simple install, easy to use and fine performance."
Pros: It's faster than others I've used, doesn't have any ad-ware or spy-ware. Plays nice with other software and is not a memory hog. Works fine on my old, slow Dell GSX-50 (1.0 Ghz CPU, 512 Mb RAM, 60 Gb HDD) running XP-Pro & Compaq M700 laptop (WIN2K).
Cons: Haven't had any problems yet. Takes a while to collect info on your (share) library during start up. The internal preview/playback is a bit uneven but OK for quick checks.
Summary: I find the controls easy to use and the various functions are well labeled and explained. This is one you really can "set and forget", letting it do it's thing in the background while you work on something else, play a game, surf the web or whatever... read more >>
