Editors' Review

FrostWire is a fork of the LimeWire source code, and as such, it functions exactly the same. When you search for a file using FrostWire, you get results from LimeWire, and vice versa.

However, the user experience differs in two ways. One is that the code is actually based on LimeWire Pro, the paid version of the popular P2P client, so users don't have to worry about simultaneous download restrictions, and they won't get bombarded by ads. Also, befitting the name, the interface has changed from green to blue and has been slightly improved. Tabs have rounded corners, and there are two additions, as well. Connections monitors your outgoing and incoming connections by host name, but also provides bandwidth information, the vendor and version being used, and more. There's also a built-in community chat.

When we tested it, the built-in media player in FrostWire didn't work with MP3s or MPGs, although those files worked fine in LimeWire and elsewhere. The app also comes bundled with the ASK toolbar, but you can opt out of that during the installation process. While some people have experienced faster download times with FrostWire compared with its parent, others have not. FrostWire and LimeWire are practically indistinguishable, although the lack of ads is a big plus.

"Slow D/L and a PC usage Hog"

    August 06, 2014   |   By GIlRavardy

    Version: FrostWire 5.7.4

    Search torrent sites on Frostwire
easy to understand for basic users
    Media Players in program

    PC hog, slows everything
Blocked from most torrent sites (will explain in Summary)
Not much for the experienced torrent user

What used to be a great all-in-one torrent downloader has hit ground zero, like a pumpkin shot from an air cannon. I used this a few years back when i was active in torrents (2009-2011). Was a great, easy, go-to program for the casual and lazy downloader. Just recently got back into torrents (2014) and brushed the dust and leaves of Frostwire and updated it. Hoping for good results like I had in yesteryears. DISAPPOINTMENT strikes when i do my search on the in-program engine and nothing shows up... Scratch my head and try different file types and still nothing (or very little). Used to be years ago the search was like google and you had to sift through hundreds or thousands of results to find exactly what you were looking for. Times changed for Frostwire so I found out why.

Here is why. As many know sites get a kickback from advertisers each time the site is viewed. With Frostwire bypassing the sites wih their search engine the sites were not getting their view count, so they weren't getting their $$ for ads on the site. Hence, Frostwire has been blocked from most torrent hosting sites. Since the only great PRO for Frostwire is the internal search engine, it renders it almost useless.

Also, because of this... Downloads are extremely slow. I tried several different ways to speed it up with no success (changing ports etc.). Since Frostwire also doesn't have much for experienced users concerning custom settings... Another bust. Example: downloading a huge file (10gig+) and the average speeds were between 200kB/s-300kB/s (I have a 20MB/s speed).. Needless to say it would take DAYS!!! DAYS??? We all know we would be disgruntled with such poor speed these days. My new torrent program (Vuze) topped this speed by 6 times or more without tweaking the mind-boggling amount of customization settings it has.

Conclusion: Bypass this program, it's time to put this one down. I would never recommend Frostwire to anyone, friend or foe. Hope this review was helpful and have a pleasant internet day!
