CNET Editors' review
Like a finely tuned laser, FreeRip 3 does one task: extract songs from your CDs. Fortunately, the app accomplishes its goals accurately, if not with flair, and makes for an easy-to-use audio-track ripper.
The latest version of the program features some long overdue enhancements. Chief among them is the inclusion of the WMA format, and it's hard to believe it wasn't included before. FreeRip also supports WAV, MP3, Vorbis, and FLAC. Other features include multitrack ripping and an option to use the program as an audio-file converter. The options menu is extensive and will appeal to any advanced user, since it makes most manners of customization a cinch.
The interface is well done, with big icons and a friendly main window split into two sections. The left pane lists the tracks, and the right gives you specific info on each song and has a tab to switch to CD-wide info. The toolbar has icons for all the major functions of the app as well as links to the publisher's community pages. In the end, FreeRip doesn't do anything its competitors don't, but it functions well, is uncomplicated and quick, and has no price tag.
Publisher's Description
From MGShareware:
FreeRIP is an easy-to-use Windows application that can convert audio from CD to MP3, OGG, FLAC, WAV, and WMA. It is also an MP3 converter, so it can convert MP3 to WAV, OGG to MP3, WMA to MP3, and WAV to FLAC. FreeRIP also integrates an MP3 tag editor that can handle both ID3 v1 and v2 tags, supports CD-Text and online CD databases for automatic metadata downloading. FreeRIP can download track data from the famous freedb.org, but also offers its exclusive FreeRIP CD DB which is a user-maintained database that offers a number of additional fields like lyrics, band, lyricist, etc. FreeRIP also offers advanced features such as the ability to rip multiple CD tracks to a single MP3 file, and a search shortcut menu to help you find images, videos, information and lyrics.
Despite the huge number of functions it incorporates, FreeRIP has an intuitive user interface; a toolbar with big icons and a main window divided into two parts, the first of which lists the tracks and the second part gives specific information on each track. FreeRIP natively supports multiple languages such as English, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and French.

"People need to read more before posting comments"
Version: FreeRIP 3.66
Pros
It does the job, and it is not too bad an interface, tries to keep it simple and user friendly, but makes it that bit more convoluted for more advanced users, but hey it's free!
Cons
Yes it wants to install a toolbar - BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO, YOU CAN SAY 'NO'
Yes it is slow - BUY THE FULL VERSION IF YOU WANT SPEED!
Listen people, hard to believe, but companies don't write software for the happiness it brings, they want to sell it, and this App, does the "Buy the full version" nagging as nicely as you can hope for. It does not limit how much you convert, it just slows it a little. If speed is all important, then buy the full version, is that too much to ask? -

"Tries to install Yahoo Search bar"
Version: FreeRIP 3.66
Pros
I'm sure it works great just fine like everyone says but 2.5 immediate points off for attempting to load a bunch of junk into my browsers. The default case just lists a bunch of stuff to install including "toolbars" which I recognized as code for "Get ready to have Yahoo et all slammed at ya whether you like it or not! Have fun getting rid of it.
Cons

Hate software that does this stuff - and they're pretty sneaky about it. -

"Forces rip @ 192 kbps; questionable privacy"
Version: FreeRIP 3.65
Pros
It may well work if you only need a simple rip.
Cons
The MP3 rip rate is 192 kbps. Won't go higher as I need it to. Also, the EULA says "It does not collect any personally identifiable information from or about you," and "FreeRip does not collect any personally identifiable information about you (such as your name, email address, etc.). The only information collected from you are general preferences you may supply during the setup process and your IP address, and none of that information is attributable to you specifically."
Yet paragraph 2 also says "Your IP address may also be used to help identify you and to gather broad demographic information that is anonymous in nature and is not associated with particular individuals. Other anonymous information may be gathered for use in providing advertisements." Being identified and kept anonymous? Would you trust that contradictory guarantee? I don't.Summary
Might give you a cookie cutter rip at mediocre quality, but don't expect your Internet usage will be anonymous while FreeRips tracks it.
