Perhaps useful for a quick game of Quake, this proxy program isn't robust enough (or perhaps secure enough) to invite the whole neighborhood over. FreeProxy creates a virtual server that allows a number of users to share an Internet connection. If you've never managed a proxy before, this program might not be the best place to start -there's no help file, and it's not the most intuitive process. While you can add IP addresses and user names to the proxy, you also can block addresses as well.
FreeProxy also is able to track connections, and record them on a log file. Yet we were surprised (and a bit alarmed) to find there's no password protection or other security feature for people joining the group. Overall, FreeProxy's good for a small party, but it's not for beginners.
Publisher's description
From Hand-Crafted Software :FreeProxy enables many users to share an Internet connection. The basic features include proxying HTTP, SMTP, POP, FTP Proxy, TCP Tunneling, and SOCKS 4/4a/5. The application works well with a wide range of clients including browsers, ICQ, and MSN messenger and comprehensive help illustrates the setup of these clients. In addition, FreeProxy includes authentication to both an internal user database or to a windows domain, extensive reporting, comprehensive control of resource permissions, URL filtering, IP address filtering, local port binding, demand dialing, calendar control, proxy chaining, and includes a functional Web server, plus numerous other features. It will run as a service in all platforms from Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, and NT through to Server 2003. FreeProxy is professional freeware geared for volume usage, but still will have you up and running in a matter of minutes.

Version: FreeProxy 3.81 build 1514
"Seems nice and well featured"
Pros: The handling of the tool is really ok. The dialogs are well designed and it seems as if the offered features are enough and useful. I like the management of the starting of the service (cmd-box or windows service). logging is built in.
Cons: The Import function is a mess! If you abort an import, all your current users are lost! The export doesn't ask for overwrite!
The whole tool somehow doesn't work properly yet. My browsers don't get access to the internet via this proxy. But that doesn't have to mean a thing. This is the first time I try proxies ;)

Version: FreeProxy 3.81 build 1514
Pros: Nice user interface. I don't know anything about proxyservers, but with a little trial and error I did manage to get this working for my simple win98 network. And it's free.
Cons: I like that I can connect to the internet from my client, but I would also like to be able to disconnect.

Version: FreeProxy 3.81 build 1514
"Cannot believe its freeand no experience necessary!"
Pros: The program itself comes preconfigured. If you want to set up a quick LAN internet sharing, simply view the quick getting started guide on a fast setup, and you are ready to gojust follow the preconfigured example. I recommend that step for a small networkmy network, which has two computers sharing one dialup connection, follows the given example. You dont even have to dig into the guide at all! But if you want tighter control over your network, you should check out the help file. You can have unlimited users or as much as your network can handle. By the way, I really like the unlimited HTTP cachewhich makes surfing on a dialup connection a little faster, since I visit mostly the same pages
Cons: I really have nothing against the program but the option to run the proxy could be a little bit more simpler

Version: FreeProxy 3.81 build 1514
Pros: This is an amazingly powerful tool for being free. It has the ability to turn your computer into a webserver or many kinds of proxy servers, makes it highly versatile. It is capable of custom time scheduling for when you want it active, making it useful for if you only want it active when you are at work/school. It also has users to restrict access to those who you do not want to have access.
Cons: Not very user friendly... it's confusing until you get the hang of it. They got a help button on most screens to help with that tho.
