Free Fire Screensave sets users' monitors ablaze, igniting each window and icon in translucent flames. It's a cool effect, and the intuitive interface allows for just the right amount of customization; users can personalize their settings without being overwhelmed by options.

The features that users can tweak include the speed of the flames' flickering, whether the screensaver fades out or ends immediately upon exit, and the program's sounds and music. Users can choose between two built-in pieces of music (Romantic and Melancholic), set the program to use other music from the computer, or turn the music off entirely. Crackling fire sounds can also be adjusted in volume or turned off. This program offers multimonitor support for users who desire more than one blazing screen; this can be turned off for those who don't. Users can also easily take a screenshot of the flaming desktop, which could provide a not-so-subtle way to tell your boss what you really think of your latest assignment. (If only it showed holes burning through Word documents!)

This freeware installs and uninstalls cleanly, making it a hassle-free desktop enhancement. Users who want to add a little bit of heat to their computers should find this an enjoyable addition to their screensaver collections.

"Not so Great"

September 11, 2012  |  By realitycheck5

 |  Version: Free Fire Screensaver 2.20

Pros

Looks cool and fun.

Cons

I tried and tried to download this screensaver. When it finally did download, it absolutely wouldn't function. I've downloaded many programs from c|net and never had a problem. Way too much trouble to mess with. I deleted it.

Summary

The screensaver looked great on c|net's site, but would not work properly.

"Okay, but not really a 'screensaver' per se"

April 18, 2012  |  By Seething_Sage

 |  Version: Free Fire Screensaver 2.20

Pros

Options to customize some of the settings including sounds. Effect is cool.

Cons

1. On my 1920 x 1200 display, the 'snapshot' it takes of my screen to put the flames overlay on is a much lower resolution than my actual screen, so it's like I'm looking at a zoomed in/cropped view of my desktop. That sort of ruins the effect.

2. As an actual screensaver, which is supposed to serve the function of preventing LCD image persistence (a.k.a. burn-in), it doesn't really work. The windows it shows are static underneath the flame effect, which doesn't move and only flickers in place, and red is the absolute worst color for causing burn-in. But as long as you set your power options to actually turn off your entire display after the screensaver is on for afew minutes, you should be fine. But I wouldn't leave this running for any great length of time with the monitor set to never go to sleep... that could be bad over time.

Summary

It's cool and has potential. But it needs to be capable of higher resolutions, and IMO to prevent LCD image persistence it ought to add some kind of "burning all windows down to ash at the bottom of the screen" effect or something like that, which would reset/loop... preventing the same windows/effects always being in the same spot on your screen. (There used to be an old Win 98 screensaver that disintegrated your screen pixel by pixel that it would be cool to see it emulate.)
