This download utility is surprisingly attractive and full-featured for a freeware product, and its operation couldn't be more straightforward. To download a file, just click a link in your browser or drag it onto the program's tiny, semitransparent window.
In our comparison tests, Free Download Manager beat out Opera's download manager 85Kbps to 53Kbps. Its automation features also are very good. Like other managers, it can automatically dial a modem, start a download, or shut down the PC. Unlike many of them, it also can change the number of connections depending on download speed, or disconnect and shut down the computer if a file is unavailable.
If you want to boost your download speed for free, this utility is certainly worth a try.

Version: Free Download Manager 1.45
"Pretty Decent Download Manager"
Pros: This download manager works well with Internet Explorer, or IE shell. It works quickly, downloading files much faster than when I did not have it. It has good options, such as allowing the user to set default locations to save certain types of file groups. It monitors the browser to see when you click on a download link, and if you do, it pop up some options for you to set before downloading. It automatically adjusts the amount of sections it needs for a particular download. The ability to reconnect and resume broken downloads is a blessing, since in IE, if your download is broken, you are fresh out of luck.
Cons: This program sometimes may not name files well if you select the option for automatic file naming. And sometimes, it may not be able to reconnect some downloads. It should allow an option to let the user scan for viruses on a right-click of a file. Also, the user interface could use an overhaul. Still, it is well worth the try, because it is free.

"I feel stunned, and not in a good way"
Pros: Eh...works ok, once you clean up the mess at the beginning (read cons)
Cons: After months of searching, I got my hopes up when I saw the high ratings and reviews of this program. What did I get? First virus detection EVER detected on my computer, and after I got rid of that, some messy spyware to clean up. I guess the writers don't know that if a product is 'free', you don't stuff spyware and a trojan horse in it...

"Toolbar troubles, stay away...installs spyware bar"
Pros: Nice HTML downloader built in, making retrieving images from websites a breaze.
Cons: SPYWARE DO NOT DOWNLOAD PLEASE FOR THE SAKE OF CHILDREN DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS PRODUCT EVER. I had this download manager on my computer before the crappy spybar was included with it, and it was slightly buggy and unstable but on the whole was great. Now (tisk tisk tisk) it installs a spybar that slows Internet Explorer down to a STOP. Download.com won't event load anymore in IE, just another reason to use faithful Firefox.

Version: Free Download Manager 1.45
Pros: INTEGRATED excellently with both IE and FF. I run both browsers at the same time so far without problems. The SCHEDULER and RESUME functions are also great. Overall for a FREE UTILITY program it has functioned excellently for me, and I recommend it to everyone.
Cons: Although the publisher indicated that you can get UP TO a 600% increase I only noticed about a 25% increase with 4 links to the a server. But that only gets me between 4k to 6k down, without any other activity on my part. I am curious where the rest of my 56k bandwidth is.
