Editors' Review

This font-management tool fixes faulty fonts and also gives you a host of tools for organizing font files. We think its drag-and-drop operations offer significant advantages over Apple's built-in tools. And since corrupt or mismatched font files can cause inconsistent printing or crashes, FontAgent Pro should help your Mac stay on the straight and narrow, too. You can create custom font menus, nested sets, and multiple libraries for specific projects, making it easy to preview and choose from fonts in your collection. The program has an attractive interface that should make you feel at home, with WYSIWYG views and a simple FontPlayer for viewing and searching. With its advanced tools and features, casual users will appreciate the program's Setup Wizard when first getting started.

"FontAgent Pro is superior in every way to other font management programs."

June 02, 2006  |  By Christine, Bradford Pub

 |  Version: FontAgent Pro 3.1

FontAgent Pro leaves all other font management programs in the dust. My main concern is getting my projects to RIP correctly for press. FAPro makes it all so easy. I have hundreds of postscript fonts and over the years, some of them have been corrupted, duplicated, and backed up onto various archives. Often, I need to use these fonts. It can be a big headache to identify damaged fonts manually. I need my fonts working correctly, no matter what. I don't have time for troubleshooting fonts, and I definitely don't have time for software crashes. FAPro imports my selected fonts, and separates out any fonts that are corrupt or damaged. I have confidence that I won't lose time struggling with deadlines that can't be met because my computer is crashing and my fonts are to blame. I won't be getting any calls from my pre-press manager asking for replacement fonts because the fonts are corrupt or missing. There's no chance that I can inadvertently use a corrupt font in my work. FontAgent Pro ensures that my projects will reproduce correctly. Keep up the great work!

"Very impressive"

After using this before and not loving it, I decided to give v3.1 a try, and was VERY impressed with everything. After it installs, it plops a disk image in the application's folder with just about every activation plug-in. This can be very deceiving because if you turn on the auto-activation in the preferences, only the quark plug-in is necessary (figures). So don't bother wasting your time installing the plugins as they are completely unnecessary, even when you quit the application. They didn't update the user guide for this release, and the readme's with each plugin are incorrect as well. Just thought I'd share that because if I hadn't read a review elsewhere, I would have promptly installed the auto-activation plugins. I tested my Adobe apps without the plugins, and it worked seamlessly. Even after I had quit the app. How refreshing. I was using linotype's fontexplorer (be sure to turn it off or uninstall any previous font management apps), but I've now switched to this incredibly stable, intuitive, easy-to-use font manager (took only 5 minutes of usage!). I was astounded by the font validation checker (linotype would just give you a folder that said 'undefined' if there was a font problem) and the speed. Give it a try, but unless you use Quark, ignore the plugins disk image that gets installed. The only complaint I have is that Flash 8 doesn't have a plugin and fonts are not automatically activated. If you do activate a font, you have to quit Flash and restart it for the font to be seen by your project. Very annoying and I hope that insider software can find a workaround. I would also like a way to preview fonts without having to add them to the library.

"Best Font Handler Yet!"

I have tried the demo, which is fully functional, and it is great.

Loads fonts easily... and the "Font Player" is a tool any designer will use over and over!

These guys are also real nice to work with too... I'm buying it for all my clients!

"G-R-E-A-T product!"

I think this application is one of the bests in its category. In the past I've tried to manage my fonts with FontBook, Suitcase, FontExplorer X... and I think FontAgent Pro is the best choice for the common user: it "simply" does what it promises, withouth a hitch. And that's great. Also, works very well in Classic (I'm still usign QuarkXPress 4.11), and is completely localized in Italian.

"Thanks Insider!!"

First, thanks for the free upgrade for 3.0.x users. The new features are welcome and I'm most happy that when I click on the app in the dock, 2 bounces and the FAP window pops open right away (where there used to be a lag due to my large library). Before, I'd rated this as 4 stars, but I gotta give in and bump it up to 5 stars now. I tried LinoType FontXplorer yesterday, and sure it's free, but it was not as polished as FAP.
