FolderSync is a file compare, diff and synchronization utility. It is a tool to check two different directories for changed or new files. FolderSync can be used to intelligently synchronize the files so that both directories have the same contents.
Also, FolderSync can create a binary patch file of the changed and new files. The patch file can then be applied to the "old" directory so that the files in the old and new directory are the same.

When I tried to use it to backup my iPod music directory, it couldn't handle the large number of files and directories and gave an error message - in German!

I were looking for simple tool to synchronize folders with some exceptions (some file types) and found the tool exactly without this functionality working :)
to my mind if you say some function works in a tool it must work or just exclude this from a tool! -

I simply downloaded and installed the program and began using it - did not need to fiddle around trying to figure out what commands did what and didn't need to look up anything in Help to get started.
Cons
none found so far - it does exactly what I want it to do (maintaining my back-up drive with up-to-date versions).
