• Still Loving It !!

  Pros

  Version 6 is out and it's not much different than v.5.1.1 from the user's point of view - which is to say it's terrific ! I tried the "quick optimize" feature and, whoa!, it really works. There is a noticeable improvement in speed. Eventually I'll try the "full optimize", but the developer says that's something you only need to do once a year or so.

  Cons

  None whatsoever.

  Summary

  Needless to say, this is a great defragger. Optimized for 64 bit systems, extremely fast, fascinating and helpful tutorials, supported by ongoing development: all contribute to making UltraDefrag stand out in a field filled with capable competitors. The difference must be that, unlike other defraggers, it works at the kernal level. In any case, it's become my defragger of choice, and to it's publishers i'd like to say "thank you !" and keep up the great work !

  (Note: this is an early review; normally I would wait until I'd used a piece of software for a while before reviewing it, but I'm so impressed with it I want to turn people onto it as soon as possible.) 1) Designed for 64 bit systems (finally !) 2) Lightweight (2.5 MB) and easy on system resources. 3) Intuitive and easy to use interface, despite the numerous options built into this tool. 4) First-rate "users guide" (they call it a handbook) that's actually worth reading; has some good common-sense info in the "Tips and Tricks" section I'd never thought of, and the rest of it is quite extensive- covers all the bases. 5) Open Source (see summary)

  Cons

  None to speak of (unless you absolutely MUST have a glitzy GUI with constant pop-ups trying to sell you something.)

  Summary

  If you use a 64 bit system (in my case: Win7 x64 SP1) you probably already know that programs written for a 32 bit system will work, but most likely not as well as a 64 bit specific program. At least that's been my experience. This is the first 64 bit defragger I've seen, and as if that wasn't enough, it's open source as well. More and more I find myself drawn to the open source movement. Just read the GNU's (like an end user's agreement that most of us don't read) and you'll see what I mean: not only are they not trying to sell you anything, but they're of the philosophy that high-quality software should be FREE TO EVERYONE ! Call me an anarchist if you like, but that's a concept I can fully embrace. While it may be true that the internet runs on commerce, I consider open source programmers to be the true heroes of the computer world (hey, they could be using their considerable talents hacking you), and UltraDefrag stands out as a great example of this. My thanks to it's authors for this fine utility, and I highly recommend it to one and all.
