Editors' review

Rich in Web content, short on cash? This free, open-source FTP application is handy if you're looking for a solid tool to handle FTP transfers and don't want to part with your bucks.

The straightforward interface offers translations in most of the world's major languages. Caching directories speeds up browsing FTP sites, and multiple secure connection options ensure that you can move files around without concern. Bookmarking comes in two flavors: the Site Manager for all your major FTP locations, and QuickConnect for fast switching on the fly.

The program lets you download or upload multiple files at once from and to several servers. If your bandwidth is somewhat limited, you'll appreciate a feature that lets you automatically adjust transfer speeds based on the time of day or date. FileZilla also lets you browse FTP sites mid-transfer. The lack of a task scheduler is compensated for, in our eyes, by a powerful filter so you only see the files you need.

FileZilla is no monster, either, eating up a manageable 50 MB in memory. Clearly, this is one of the best FTP tools around.

    "Pretty easy to use"

    May 28, 2014   |   By mdblocher

    Version: FileZilla 3.8.0

    Pros

I had used Wise-ftp before and the interface was somewhat similar so the learning curve was not steep. It worked as well as the other program had.

    Cons

There was a bit of confusion in getting started. It asked for the host name. I thought that meant my ISP, but it wanted the name of domain I was updating.
Setting the permissions on new files was not as intuitive as I would like, but a bit of trial and error taught me how to get the result I wanted.
3/4 of the way through uploading, it started skipping files. I had set the rules to overwrite it the file was newer, but for some unknown reason that was changed. Went to the Filezilla forum and found a similiar complaint, with a clue that the overwrite rule was the cause. Changed the rule to always overwrite and got the rest of the update loaded without problems.

    Summary

With any new software, one has to figure out how the program's logic differs from your own, and learn the new expected behavior to successfully use the program. This one is no different. And the price is right ;>)

    "Garbage Mostly"

    May 11, 2014   |   By yariplus

    Version: FileZilla 3.8.0

    Pros

    Free
    Feature Rich

    Cons

    Overly complex setup
    Extremely verbose documentation
    'Updates' usually break installations
    Snobby support team

    Summary

Great tool. But, I would not recommend it to anyone but a Professional Server Administrator. I don't want to be required to have a Doctorate in FTP. I just want to send a few files to my server.

    "Loaded with adware"

    May 09, 2014   |   By CanadjunBeef

    Version: FileZilla 3.8.0

    Pros

When you go to install, they do warn you that you are about to ALSO install a package of pop-up-displaying trashware that will cost you minutes if not hours to remove.

    Cons

    See above.

    Summary

Avoid. Freeware usn't free if it hijacks your browser.

    "The best (and it's free|)"

    April 24, 2014   |   By petert2005

    Version: FileZilla 3.8.0

    Pros

    It's free
    Generally easy to use
    Quick
    Remote file editing
    Bookmarks

    Cons

None that I can currently think of

    Summary

After trying demos of professional FTP programs someone recommended me filezilla they used it primarily because it was free and the fact it allowed remote file editing. I decide to try it and haven't looked back.

It's generally easy to use at least for those familiar with FTP programs and seems quick. It has a bookmark system for connecting to your favourite servers and you can set it to go to a local folder in another window in the program to the right.

It has lots of settings I've never touched but it appears to be feature rich.
