"Direct Folders is NOT a virus (false positive)"

April 18, 2011  |  By GoPostal123

 |  Version: Direct Folders 3.61

Pros

Hooks on most open file dialog boxes to change folders fast!
Works great on Windows 7 x64
Quickly switch to recent/favorite folders.

Cons

Had some issues opening java based open dialog boxes.
Support isn't good.

Summary

Direct folders hooks to the open file dialog box which could cause a virus scanner to think it's a trojan. This is known as a false positive.

Wonderful program, I paid 10 dollars for the PRO version. Despite the limited support, direct folders pro has been a huge time saver.
TIP:
If you have a file dialog box open, switch to your file manager and switch back to the open dialog box. You can quickly change directories this way.

"Handy utility for getting to your most-used folders"

August 08, 2009  |  By RobD60

 |  Version: Direct Folders 3.61

Pros

Easy to configure, easy to get to from the system tray--and it's NOT malware.

Cons

While there is a paid PRO version, the online help file (basically a Flash demo) says nothing about the difference between the standard and PRO versions.

Summary

First, the trojan issue. This is from the
Malwarecrawler.com website: http://malwarecrawler.com/?p=13
Read the article and you find the trojan alerts come from a
heuristics engine that flags this as a POSSIBLE trojan; the file "is
deemed to have the characteristics of malware after being analysed by
the Heuristics engine, but one that has not yet been specifically
analysed by the Kaspersky Viruslab." (Do Kaspersky, Avast and AVG
share a heuristics engine or some of its code?). This means that the
file has characteristics that flag it as a possible trojan; but until
your anti-virus provider's coders have analyzed the file, they don't
know that it is or isn't malware. So they flag it.

That said, this is an excellent program that sets an icon in your
system tray. From there you can add the folders you want to quickly
access: Documents, Music, Video--whatever. You can do the same thing
with a dock, but DirectFolders takes less space. You can also change
the folder icon for DirectFolders--there are 16 icons and you can add
more. If you like, you can also add a specific application. Call this
a mini-Windows Explorer that beats the Start button for getting to
the folder you want now. This doesn't have the eye candy of a dock,
but it's efficient and tiny. Be aware, though, that by default it will not start up with Windows; you have to enable that in Options (a strange default, when you consider the purpose of the application).

August 07, 2009  |  By Erebo

Cons

I would like to see the program, but for what I have read, no way!! jose. mail me when cnet check or ask for a correction for the program. No way I am going to take the chance

"Caution advised"

July 13, 2009  |  By bolx20

 |  Version: Direct Folders 3.61

Pros

please read the cons

Cons

I downloaded this with high hopes, but as soon as I tried to install it AVG flagged up a virus. Maybe it is a false positive and I hope it is, but until I learn different then I cannot and will not use this software.
