Everybody who uses a computer customizes his or her desktop to some degree. With DesktopX you can mold your work space any way you like. Chock-full of themes, icon manipulators, and simple programs, DesktopX gives you an unlimited number of choices to freak out your desktop.

The most unique feature of DesktopX is its ability to create and run simple programs, called objects, on your desktop. The default installation includes a variety of objects, such as a CNN Headline News ticker, an analog clock, and a simple MP3 player. You can easily download more objects. Interesting icon tweaks include expansion to just smaller than giant, as well as a feature that makes icons grow when you mouse over them. We like the themes, which provide a unique collection of objects, background images, and other tweaks that can switch your style in one swoop. All told, DesktopX offers extensive tools for redesigning your desktop.

DesktopX is a new program that allows users to build their own desktops (see screenshot). It creates an object-oriented structure for Windows in which users can mix and match DesktopX objects with their standard desktop or apply themes that give them their own unique desktop. Users can make their Windows desktop behave similarly to alternative operating systems (Linux, MacOS, OS/2, Amiga, and so on) or something completely different. Additionally, companies can use the program to create a standardized and simplified desktop for their users, and parents can use it to create desktops that are kidproof. Version 0.65 added advanced grouping, an undo feature, the ability to tile and stretch objects, and tons of bug fixes. Version 0.75 makes it easier to make themes resolution independent, and the system tray and taskbars are now DesktopX objects (you can put your system tray anywhere on the screen). There are tons of bugs and performance fixes, a simplified user interface, and a built-in object browser. Also, users can now use PNG graphics (with alpha blending).

Version 0.90 concentrates on trying to make DesktopX easier to use. There is now a theme browser built in, and the various types of things that a DesktopX object can point to has been greatly simplified. Lots of bugs have been fixed over the previous beta. There are also now persistent objects, objects that you can set to stay between changing themes.
